big mother mushroom... ID?
    #3986890 - 03/29/05 09:40 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I've only recently found an interest in mushrooms, and after studying this site it's sparked my interests even more (great content.. everything you need to know about mushrooms and more!) Anyway on my way to the shop to get the paper i stumbled across this big mother mushroom and figured i would take it home and try to ID it but i'll tell you this thing isnt making it easy.. i guess i'll go through what i can tell you ....

First of all i live in Cairns, its up the north end of Queensland in Australia.. It was growing by itself among some trees in the grass. I don't have any pictures so i'll try and describe it as well as i can.
The cap is spherical and measures about 12cm in diameter and is cream coloured with a light brown centre.. very coarse texture.. small dark dots all over it.
the stem is about 8cm long with a white ring around the top. its a dark brown and quite thick and solid...
the gills are a very dark brown and don't attach to the stem at all..
It smells very strongly, but i can't really explain what it smells like.. mushroom i guess.
The thing that stumped me is that the thing didn't bruise at all, and when i try'd to do a sporeprint i got nothing..?

Any ideas? i can understand if theres not enough info to ID it, just a very curious mushroom... looks very similar to Chlorophyllum molybdite only the colours don't match up... mabye it's dead?

Well perhaps it is just dried out or over aged to the point where it wont drop spores anymore. Did you try using a dark colored surface to be sure that the spore print isn't white?

Perhaps it is something in the Lepiota or Agaricus genus.. The description sounds close. Hard to be sure though.

Sounds like an Agaricus to me. Lepiota would not have "very dark brown" gills. Some species of Agaricus are edible, and some are poisonous.

For the most part they do, when in good condition. Considering the vague description, possibility of darkening due to parasitic molds/old age (note he couldn't get a spore print) its just hard to be sure without an actual photo so I'm just throwing up possibilities. Agaricus did come to mind also.

I think that eris was right with Lepiota

http://www.ilmyco.gen.chicago.il.us/Taxa/Images/LepioGramb358.jpg

This looks perfect except for gill colour and shorter stem.. but it does look pretty old with what looks to be mould or something spotted over the cap.. (im still new to mushroom hunting what i thought was a thick stem is actually quite thin) Thanks for the help!

Mushroom season starts in 2 days!!! YAY!! look forward to sharing my finds.. i'll make sure to include pictures next time!

yeah thats what i thought at first, but the gill colours didnt match and the cap was covered in dots.... quite possibly just an old sick Chlorophyllum molybdite dieing in the grass that i decided to take home with me hehe... owell, live and learn, that was the first mushroom i've ever picked... Now mushrooms are in season all i have to do is wait for some rain before i go out hunting for real... Thanks again !
