i know everyone says once fruiting 12/12 but just curious as to why 24 is bad, if its phototrophic it would seem like any amount of light would do? sorry, i couldnt find any info on this in the archive.

Mushrooms benefit greatly during from the dark cycle, I know this for a fact. Can't give you the biological explanation, because I've never heard one, if there even is one so far.
It's very important, especially during fruiting stage. They almost seem to grow 3x as fast during the dark cycle.

faster isnt better necessarily though, is it? im just wondering if theres any proof that 24 is harming them, or why its not just as good. the imitation of the natural cycle makes sense, my problem is that my cakes are in a room with a plant that autoflowers, and benefits from 24 hour light, and the shrooms have appeared really small so far, but the ones in casings are starting to come in pretty large despite the 24 hour light. im still worried that im not getting the best product possible, i suppose theyd be better off in a closet. but, the temp in the room there in is more optimal than the closet... choices.

Not always, but in this case...darkness is better. As diver said, I can't explain it either...but its a definate fact.
If the temp is below 82 then they will be better in the closet.

Someone posted their experiment using differing light cycles awhile back, and it proved rather convincingly that mushrooms grow faster with an extended dark period.

the dark gives the mushrooms a chance to fatten up before 'reaching for the light' again.
also...more light evaporates your casing layer.

well, sounds good enough to me. not worth risking anyway, and it would make sense that i got small shrooms cause they grew in a few days and dropped spores, seemed quick. and my casing layer was unexplainably dry... haha. anyway, sweet, thanks scatman/diver/colbadol

my friend grew with 24hrs of light, and they were some big, bomb ass potent shrooms. I can't say that this is better than 12/12, and most likely it isn't. He didn't exactly go about the growing process in the most optimal way. He just did what he knew worked and didn't care if one tiny factor made it work better...

Alright, during the photo-period (w/ light) mushrooms produce a growth enzyme. But the enzyme is not activated until there is low-none UV penetration. Technically, the mushrooms grow in the dark and promote growth during the day. 12/12 is perfect.
