Searching for Active Gymnopilus
    #3986121 - 03/29/05 06:24 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Been searching on our land in texas to see if there are any gymnopilus mushrooms and the only mushrooms i have found were these two:

These don't look safe:

These were found under cedar trees (each were growing alone)

Last year I found big orange mushrooms growing under cedar trees also. The caps were about 4 inches wide, the stem was 1-2 inches tall and 1/4-1/2" thick. Are any of these close to actives? Thanks, Chronic

Those are not active. In order to at least be able to ID down to genus we would need some more info, there is a template of features needed in the sticky post above.
In my opinion they should both be considered inedible.

I'm not aware of Gyms growing in the spring. They're primarily a fall mushroom.

They dont look anything like gyms.
Where i come from Gyms are quite common - but im in Australia and maybe things are different where you are. Anyway, they are a cold wather mushroom so id expect that your fall and winter would be a more ideal time??

I find a couple each spring- maybe one "patch" a year for two years. I saw some fruiting ridiculously in my old woodchip piles before I moved back to Greenville two weeks ago- though I assure you the ones you found bare no resemblance.

The G. spectabils have to be the most horrible tasting and bitter of all mushrooms ever.

I remember when we almost called an ambulance for Dr. Steven Pollock at tone of the Myco Media shroom conferences at Camp Orkila on Orcas Isalnd for a tow fast trip. He and gary lincoff were stoned out of their gords on them. I tasted a pea size nibble of one and twenty minutes later my mouth was still puckered up. Here is a picture of Pollock with Andrew Weil. Pollock is stone. And weil is scratching his head and his feet at the same time and Pollock is studdying the scratching.

Excellent- yeah they taste like dried crap might.  Nothing forgiving about them at all- a true marker.  Excellent old pic of Weil/Pollock, BTW.
