Some of my Underwater Photos
    #3985061 - 03/29/05 02:05 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

I wouldn't even consider myself an amateur photographer. I just love taking pictures and sharing. I know you guys would appreciate this. These are a few of my favorite underwater pictures I've taken in the last few years. I had to reduce the quality substantially to get them to be within the upload limit. Enjoy!

This is a flounder, in case you can't tell. It's a really interesting fish that starts life as a free-swimming juvenile, but as it matures, one eye migrates through the head to the other side, as it takes an adult life on the sea floor. It has a really cool pupil.

The first one because I like mazes, and this looks like natures own living labyrinth....
The second because the turtles look so at peace, I wonder what they think about swimming free for a living....
The third because the colors are stunning.....

Nice pictures....!  I may be visiting the Great Barrier Reef in Austrailia sometime soon....    It has always been a dream to go scuba diving there to see the living colors face to face....       Guess I should learn how to scuba before too long....

The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity. ~ Albert Einstein

All these photos were done on scuba, except the maze one you like, which was done on snorkel.  If you are serious about diving the Great Barrier Reef, I would recommend you learn before you go, then do some dives before hand so you are comfortable and confident in the water.  You will spend less time worrying about safety, and more time enjoying the scenery.

However, the GBR is relatively shallow, so you could snorkel.  I am a strong swimmer and can hold my breath for a while, so I love to snorkel.  It is very minimalist compared to scuba diving.  It's just me, mask, fins, snorkel.  On scuba, it's me + mask, fins, snorkel + tank, bouyancy compensator vest, regulators, gauges...

Aaaahhhh, maybe it was my wrongful assumption that one would have to scuba at the GBR....  I know nothing about it yet, except the fact that I would ver much like to see that part of life, and be surrounded in it....  Thanx~ for the tip,   perhaps I won't need to learn scuba'ing after all...!

Here's another tip: DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING!

It's for your own good as well as for that being touched. Seriously. Not only can many beautiful things pack a powerful punch, but alot of organisms have a delicate mucus coat that can be rubbed off by touching them. That mucus protects thier delicate tissues. This is especially true for corals. Believe it or not... that "maze-looking" picture is of a coral, a colonial animal that is not too dissimmilar from a jellyfish (they are actually closely related).
