First time. About to get this thing rolling! (update: more q's on pg 2)

Here's what I've got:
3 syringes of Koh Samui Super Strain 36 half-pint tapered mason jars Brown Rice Flour Vermiculite 2 gallons of spring water
2 sterlite tubs & 100 watt submersible aquarium heater for TiT
Flucker's thermo/hygrometer from petsmart (seen someone on here say good things about this one several times)
lysol, oust, hand sanitizer, dial, isopropyl, h202, 3 spray bottles
Just a few questions:
1: Do I need to put anything between the suction cup bracket for the heater and the bottom of the sterlite tub? I live alone in a trailer and these things burn up in a second. Do I have anything to worry about?
2: I have a cool mist humidifier. Would it be a good idea to put some h20 + h202 in it and run it for a day or so before I prepare the jars/inoculate? I'm sure it wouldn't hurt, but do you think this would help kill airborne contaminants?
3: I'm not using a pressure cooker. Do I have a much higher risk of getting contamination steaming in a regular pot? I'm already about $120 deep into this new "hobby," so I don't want to mess anything up, but I really can't afford a pressure cooker right now.
4: I have an alcohol lamp, or atleast I think it is. The liquid in the bottom has a bit of a pink tint to it. It kind of worries me to sterilize the needle with a flame, is there any way doing so can kill the spores?
Sorry if this stuff comes up over and over, I'm excited and I want to make sure I do everything correctly. I've read the tek's several times, but I just want to get feedback from you guys and make sure I'm getting off on the right foot. Thanks to anyone who replies, you guys are awesome.

first off, you are making casings with those jars, right?
1. No 2. No 3. No, as long as your using brown rice flour, it isn't essential to successful cultivation. 4. "There are thousands and thousands of spores in a syringe. Just flame the tip. and wipe it off with a cotton alcohol swab. "
if you need any more help, just ask.

3. You want a pressure cooker believe me.
4. There are thousands and thousands of spores in a syringe. Just flame the tip. and wipe it off with a cotton alcohol swab.
3: I'll see if I can find someone that has one I can borrow.
4: I just didn't know if it would heat up all the solution in the syringe and kill them all. I mean, tons of people have done it, so obviously not, but I'm just paranoid.

Most definitely. I was just focusing this post on preperation/inoculation. I'm sure I'll post again when it comes time to case them, but so far I'm leaning towards the 60/40 verm/coco coir tek.
I appreciate youse guyses help!

Ya thats fine, I was just making sure you weren't going to try to do cakes with tapered jars. Like i said, PC isn't essential to BRF, but if you want to ever take a stab at grains, it's a must.

When I was at Home Depot looking for vermiculite I saw something called "mushroom compost." I didn't look at it any further than to see that it has cow manure in it. Anyone heard of this or think it might be useful when it comes time to case these puppies? The bulk tek's were a bit over my head, so I don't really know anything about using poop. Just a thought.

it's not useful, you dont want to use anything that has nutrients for casing. Nutrients for casing = come here contams. I believe the mushroom compost is composted fungi.

Whats wrong with cakes in tapered jars? The top is bigger than the bottom. Isn't that ideal for doing cakes?

Mushroom compost is SPENT (used & worn out) commercial mushroom substrate, sold after fully cropped out - as garden compost. Good for garden, not good for shroom cultivation.

Another question: I've seen a couple teks that say just to eyeball the water content, and some give specific measurements. I think a measurement would be better for me because I tend to be a "more is better" type person and sometimes don't know when enough is enough Anyone have a suggestion for an exact water measurement. I guess it probably varies with which grade of vermiculite you're using. I guess mine is mid-grade.

Yeah, after reading the experience of some of the folks on here, I'll probably only inoculate 12 jars with this strain at most. I actually didn't order it, one of the vendors made an honest mistake and I got the wrong ones. I'm gonna see how they handle it, and try and get a syring of Ecuador and B+.

ANOTHER QUESTION: I got the Ball canning jars that have the two piece lid, one piece just covers the top and a band that tightens around it. Is this going to cause any problems with air exchange? I know the holes in the lide will help, but I've seen some teks advise you to loosen the lid a little. Would it be a good idea to put a coffee filter down over the top, then tighten the band around it? Seems like a good idea to me. I'm just not sure how much air exchange they need while colonizing. I've got my TiT going and it seems to be maintaining a 85F temp. I've been keeping a blanket over the top (I've just got the box of empty jars in there right now to test it.
My boss and I will be 'noc'ing them up tomorrow. I can't wait

I've got a few jars using coffee filters and verm as a filter, and a few more with polyfill. I'd like to tell you which is better, but it's only been 48 hours. As for the water level, my experience is that I start with the recipe, and check the moisture in the vermiculite by squeezing some. If it's uniform, and I can squeeze water out of the vermiculite with no pools in the bottom of my mixing bowls, I go with that.

Someone posted on here 2 parts vermiculite, 1 part brf, 1 part water. That sound about right?
Are you doing what I was talking about? Leaving the "top" off and replacing it with a coffee filter and then screwing the ring on over it? I just didn't know if this would be ok or not.
