Anyone tried the no verm polyfill tek?
    #3981849 - 03/28/05 10:23 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

where you substitute vermiculite with polyfill but dont crush the brown rice...you just cook the brown rice and use it as a substrate....then put the polyfill at the top as a barrier....

anyone tried this before?

The only mention of it is "Leave the usual 1/2" space for the vermiculite in the top." That doesn't mean game over tek because you don't want to use verm.

Think about a lid with your 4 standard holes for inoculation, and one 1/4" hole drilled in the center stuffed with PolyFill. All you would have to do is tape over the inoculation holes, and let the PF hole cover your gas exchange.

Yeah, sort of a pain messing w/ 5 holes, but you do need several inoculation points for this tek.

go to preparing the substrate it says this there

"Cook the rice according to the instructions on the package except for reducing the water to 1 1/2 cup water to 1 cup grain and leaving out the margarine/salt. Try a bite to see if it's fully cooked and tender. Then fluff and stir the grain, and spoon it into jars until full. Tap the jars to work the grain down. Don't over compact the jars. If it makes a mush in the bottom with hardly any air spaces, you should empty it out and re-fluff with a fork. Leave the usual 1/2" space for the vermiculite in the top. Wipe the top of the jars and add the vermiculite per MMGG. Use your favorite lid arrangement to close the jars and pressure cook for 30 min. at 15 PSI. The grain has already been cooked and if you work quickly, it'll still be quite hot when it goes in the cooker."

ohh thats cool

i read that you only need 1 hole in the center..and you can inoculate through the polyfill...

have you tried without using verm diver?

For shakeable grains you only need one inoculation point, but this is solid, so you need several. Nope I've only done it using verm layer, would like to get away from it though. Poly fill lids are so easy. Maybe a 4 PF hole lid for whole grain brown rice is in the cards?

so just stuff the holes with polyfill?
and leave a half inch space for nothing?
or put polyfill in there 2?

The 1/2" space isn't a big issue. What we need is a good polyfill solution for multiple inoculation points. You're on to something, possibly stuffing it underneath the lid...hmmm. It would get wet, but I've never had wet polyfill cause me any problems.

Damn, this has been bugging me for awhile now and I want a solution. Planning on getting back to WGBR shortly, but don't want to fuss w/ verm either.

I don't know though, hopefully someone has an idea here and will chime in.

Yeah, it's fine to PC PolyFill. Let me know how it turns out.

Nah forget the verm layer. You need to fill the jars 3/4 of the way up with well hydrated (not over or under cooked) brown rice. Then punch a 1/2"-3/4" hole in the center of the lid...stuff with polyfil. Use the lid like normal and inject through the polyfil, it acts as a self healing injection port. They remain shakable so only one point is needed. I still suggest adding in a smal amount of verm to whole grains..only like 1 tablespoon per quart. It helps to add it dry when straining to soak up the extra water and get a nice water content, a little more forgiving. Not needed though..

I prefer tyvek. Same deal..but two holes and a tyvek peice (free envelopes avail at the post office) over the lid. Then inject through the tyvek and cover with a bandaid. Polyfils fluffy and can get all over the place and such, tyveks just a bit neater IMO.

We are talking about whole grain brown rice. It's not shakeable, more like a solid clump that requires several inoculation points. Otherwise, one inoculation point would solve our problem.

Yeah, take my word for it, the result is a solid clump that doesn't move.  A solid clump of pure nutrition at that though, that's why WGBR rocks, no filler or waste

Any ideas?  A fresh set of eyes might solve the dilemma here--I'm coming up short with a fix here.

Mixing in the dry verm with the substrate would probably help.

I've done rye grass seed before...it also comes out to be an almost unshakable clump. If I left enough room I could shake it..but when I mixed in the dry verm while straining...it helped the water content of it alot. Tamps and cubies tear through it and it shakes easier (still need to only fill the jars 1/2-3/4 up though and shake hard) and when you spoon it it breaks up WAY easier. Broke up better then WBS in fact and made better spawn...more inoc points from the smaller kernals probably. This is how I'm going to try out the brown rice...
