Problem with casing
    #3981458 - 03/28/05 08:51 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I have done more than my share of research, and have just one problem I cannot seem to solve. I prepared a half-pint of mycelium mostly vermiculate and some brown rice. Following successful inoculation it was cased with composted cow manure. The strain is P. Cubensis (B+). Fruiting chamber is 10 gallon aquarium. Temperature has been kept between 79-85.6 fahrenheit for the past several days. Humidity is maintained by about 2 inches of damp perlite. As I understand, pinning should be initiated the moment mycelium becomes visible, and that is the problem. I cannot for the life of me get pins to form. Also, I have made certain contamination is non-existent. Pinning, ladies and gentlemen please help me out.

Air exchange sounds like an issue. I also had pinning problems with my perlite pod, I just waited it out and they eventually pinned.

Patch up myc spots and give em some patience.

I forgot to mention ventilation, but yes, I do change the air frequently.

Manure should not be used as a casing; however, it makes an excellent substrate. Keep the manure covered with plastic wrap with a few holes poked in it and incubate until it is fully colonized. Afterwards, remove the plastic cover and case it with verm & coir or verm & peat moss. You can find casing and fruiting teks in the FAQ.

Good luck.
