hiphop, not "radio rap". any comments on nelly and the sorts don't belong here.

anyone enjoying the jazz fusion/funk influenced beats coming out of the west coast from the stones throw camp via madlib and peanut butter wolf?

madvillainy is the best hiphop album released thusfar in the last 5 years. wow, unbelievable. madlib's beats are sick to frikkin death, doom is incredibly smart, honest and funny on the mic and the little interludes are great.

america's most blunted, and boy they aint lyin'.

hmmm, the biggie/tupac situation is funny. personally, i think they single handedly put hiphop in a coma for years long before thier deaths and almost killed hiphop all by themselves.

tupac i have no remorse for, i didnt like his music, his attitude or his lifestyle. he was the type of guy to write a song about him doing something he had never done before and then felt the need to live up to his repuatation so he would go out and actually be the cowboy he had pretended to be in the song he had recorded a few weeks earlier. ive heard the "hes a poet, he had good messages, ect" from many a person. wont change my opinion. i think he was trash.

biggie on the other hand had a nice flow, could freestyle his ass of and made a pretty nice contribution to hiphop on his solo debut. i mean, i like him, but he is certainly in no way "the king" of hiphop, just another mc. but his followup life after death was petty in comparison. perhaps its the production works of easy mo bee, premier and lord finesse that really drive this album for me. besides, puffy daddy is one of satan's minions and people should not involve themselves with this guy, buisness, movies, whatever. not good.

Its not even the top 40 guys anymore either.  Even the so-called "underground" is infested.  ex:I swear Mike Jonez has the vocab of a gnat.  How many fucking times can this asshole say his own name in each of his tracks and get away with it?  Mike Jonezzzzz....Miiike Joooneezzz.  Last decent hip-hop to come out of Texas was UGK.

The form is dying but won't ever go away.  A good analogy is how heavy metal in the late 80s became a cookie cutter clown act and everybody made the same worthless garbage.  Things will turn around in a few years.  In the meantime we'll just have to wait for the tide.

I did like mos def's new album as far as mainstream shit is concerned.  It rubbed me the wrong way at first. I wouldn't even call it true hip-hop but after a few listens I thinks its a good jazzy album and is different from most shit being put out; at least he's trying something.  Got bad reveiws but fuck music journalists and journalists in general for that matter.

I kind of have the feeling that the form is on the upswing. It's hard to say anything really until we have the benifit of hindsight.

I would also like to add a few props for k-os. Some of it's kinda cheesed-out but mostly it's pretty good (if radio-friendly).

yeah, I heard two tracks by rjd2 and liked neither. didn't give them much of a chance, I'll admit. Plus I wasn't high on exstacy or anything. So there's a general consensus that rjd2 is filed under hip-hop? Where do we draw such lines?

Well, since RJD2 did just recently do a hip hop album with MC Blueprint (as mentioned earlier - Soul Position), then I think we can file it under hip hop.

i'm still of the belief that rap is what mc's do, and hip hop is a style of music.

granted, "rap" has turned into into a fairly boring and mainstream psuedo-hip hop lately

but of course, i'm just some white kid on the internet, doesn't really matter what i call it :smile2:

thats a good goddamn question. what constitutes hiphop and what doesnt. hmmm. well, this question can easily be answered by looking at the four BASIC elements of hiphop : breaking, mc'ing, dj'ing and graffiti. since rjd2 is in fact a hiphop dj, he is easily filed under hiphop.

okay, I guess the tracks I downloaded both happened to be his least hip-hoppish ones. They were all squeals and bleeps, as I recall.

How about Cuban hip-hop? Anyone peep that?

well, in this day and age we're definately witnessing and experiencing first hand a revolution in music as far as electronic music is concerned. obviously hiphop has become an extremely large and extremely influencial genre of music. in the past 10 years, the sampling of hiphop music has become quite prevalant in all sorts of genres of electronic music, from the trip-hop sounds of portishead to the drum n bass sounds of hive and even out to the big beat sounds of prodigy and the chemical brothers (just for mainstream example sakes).

even moreso, we can speak of artists such as prefuse 73. now granted some of his tracks feature mc's but alot of them do not. would this actually classify him in the hiphop category or would he just be neatly placed in the ever so cluttered "idm" category (hehe, "idm", just another way of saying "wtf is this exactly?" total cop out genre).

i mean, i know alot of people place artists (who also use mc's in thier work sometimes) such as dj shadow, tricky and dj krush in the "triphop", or more commonly, the "downtempo" category but SOME people also constitute it as "hiphop" as well.

point being, theres a revolution going on right now as far as rjd2 and the likes are concerned. i would probally just lump it into the "downtempo" category on a whole since most of it is of a slower bpm like hiphop (typically ranging anywhere from 85-110 bpm). i don't neccesarly consider the actual production work by these noted artists "hiphop", but whether it is or not is really ultimately up to the listener at question.

its an odd and wonderful time for music right now with everyone and thier mom making electronic music right now since the technology required to do so is getting cheaper and more readily available for people to get thier hands on. people are being more influnced through the extreme availability of different types of music via the internet and i personally foresee some serious revolutions in the next decade. when all this happens, were gonna be asking this same question, except were gonna be saying "yes, but is it downtempo? is it idm? is it _______?"

the new Boom Bip album 'Blue eyed in the red room' is very very good. it falls almost more into the IDM catagory, but I have heard people call it hip hop.

i'm an outsider looking in and maybe i'm talking out of my ass.feel free to tell me so.it seems like none of these guys have anything relevant to say anymore.some of the older guys like Public Enemy has good social commentary and at least had a message to their music.nowadays its all about bitches and hos, money, escalades and whatnot.and whatever happened to those goofy ass hats they used to wear?those were cool!it also seems like alot of guys arent flowing.they just talk in rhyme,if that makes any sense.im not big into hip hop/rap whatever you choose to call it but the only stuff i can tolerate is the older days with NWA,Ice Cube,Snoop Doggy Dog and older Dre.thats my two cents.let the flaming begin

and if I remember right, dre and snoop were all about the cars and girls, it's just that they liked 13s and not 22s back then.

my main problem is people callign rap hip hop.  hip hop, at least aminstream, has gotten a lot more boy band like in my opinion.  more singing than rapping.

when i want rap i want a good old style rap, with a good beat.  thats ym problem with guys like eyedae.  sure he can throw out good lyrics, but his beat SUCKS (in my opinion.

you need the rhyme, the rythm, the meaning, and the beat.  and possibly more importantly than all, dont be too repetetive....which happens WAY too much *dmx*.

but hey at elast tehy making ya say uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh anymore :smirk:  man that annoyed me, to no end.

ill admit to diggin up some old cds....i was listening to redman, master p, dmx, and dre today.  still liek dre, others not so much.

another thing i have been wondering. its pretty obvious that eminem is a try hard tu pac....which annoys me personally. at teh risk of sounding liek a prick does anyone else think that dre is putting him up to the whole ja rule deal? i mean, it amy not make sense to get your guys killed, but if you can keep that from happening you are going to get them all fired up putting out good or at elast popular rap and makign a killing. jsut a thought.

and whats the deal with jay z? in eminems cd encore i got the impression he got him killed....but i cant say as i really looked into it. if not, whos coffin is eminem talkign about in toy soldiers? a song which i do like btw.

i dunno, only person id consider even remotely hiphop in any of those mentioned is redman. everyone else you mentioned is pretty much rap music. this is coming from a purist point of view though.

and when i think old, i think spoonie g and jimmy spicer and shit.  master p and dmx (even though the darkman x dates back to 91, im pretty sure you were listening to "its dark" or something even newer) are cats who are relatively new.

I am probably going to get banned by the forum POLICE.  They say I'm spamming!!!  I don't see why I can't let the Pot and Shroom community know about our CD.  That shows you how free minded some of these people really are!  Everybody wants to be the POLICE!!!! Well one thing Rap says that Hip-Hop does not say.  And that is FUCK THE POLICE!!!!  That is why we LOVE GANGSTER RAP!!!!And for the CLOWN who wants to ban me "EAT A DICK"!!!! 4 C/H

oh ya...misunderstood me.  wasnt saying they were old rappers, just those are my older cds.  all my pre 90's tapes have long since disappeared :frown:  and ya they are more rap.

im not sure what these artists are labbeled as but  i consider teh much music type "rap" to be more singy.  seems any artist on tv is trying to sound like the opposite sex.  :smirk:

not saying thats bad, just not my bag in rap.

put on some coolio now

Rap is mad played out, its just a bunch of rich bastards with a 3rd grade education. I used to like gangsta rap and it lost its vibes when G-unit came out. I used to like Busta Rhymes and DMX and stuff, but they keep making songs featuring other faggots that suck at rhyming. Hip-Hop for me is like Non Phixion, Hieroglyphics, Souls of Mischief, Ugly Duckling, and Pharcyde. I dont know if these rappers belong to a certain categorie but its Hip and Hop enough for me.

"Where you at, the whole city behind us!" PLAYED OUT!!
