Fruiting on agar
    #3981085 - 03/28/05 07:11 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

say you had some (non-isolated) mycelia on agar.
You notice a mini-shroom sprouting from the agar- it seems to originate from on/near the agar chunk used to inoculate the dish.

Should an enthusiast try to extract a small sliver of the agar from the agar at base of the mini-shroom???

does the mini shroom have cloning potential??- does the small size of the mini shroom have a (possible) negative impact on the resulting fruits that would grow from the clone culture??

should an enthusiast extract a small sliver of the agar, and then grow it out on more agar?? or should it be transferred to grain and grown out and fruited??

Sorry if I'm rambleing..... long story short:

shrooms coming up from a non-isolated agar dish- what should i do with it?? try to isolate if further?? and if so how??

or should I use it to inoculate some grain, and then fruit it on the grain???

just cut the mini shroom off the agar and put it to a new petri. But now its a clone and you only have 1 female gene and 1 male. Best bet is to cut the dime size area out from around it

Stop experimenting half way through your first grow. Grow it to maturity, watch it, learn from it. Do this a few times then experiment with different ideas and figure out what works best for you.

I don't think the size is going to be a problem. it's small because it has a limited environment(oxygen, nutrient, moisture...) i wouldn't take any mycelia with it though, because that would compromise the isolation. Personally i'd ignore the mushroom, and transfer some of the newer mycelial growth to a new plate or to substrait.

All a fruite means is that two compatably hyphae have mated. They have no sex i presume.

I would just look for all the rizomorphic mycelia and sector that out onto there own plates. That mushrooms as well, cuz we already know its capabal.

Perhaps we should let our wives answer that. . .

Well it's moot now... I've been sporaleted....

maybe I'll clone it.

another thought- instead of doing (seperate)invitro cultures- would it be a good idea to just take the agar dishes, let them fruit, and clone the biggest/first????

Not really. The biggest invitro can be big for many reasons. I would cuture all the pins, yo might be soprised by the results.
