ok. you guys are probable getting tired of me BUT... i finally got my jar lids unstuck, (hooray!) i took a wiff of one of my jars that are seperated due to contamination. but much to my surprise there was no bad smell! it smells just like my other jars, kinda earthy, grainy smelling. BUT, there is a definite area at the bottom of the jar where mycelium has grown AROUND. like somebody branded that area andnothing will grow there. this is what i believed to be contaminated. but with no bad smell can it still be contamination?? the cake is due to birth in probably a day or two. should i go ahead and put it in the terranium to see if it fruits? and if it does should i eat these shrooms? thanx for all your help guys!

You sure it has grown around that area? Or maybe it just hasn't covered that area yet....the bottom of the jar is the last place to be covered. Well, I have only a tiny bit of experience....but in 3 batches of jars, they have all grown toward the bottom and then the bottom center is the last area to be covered by mycellium.

did your jar get overheated or waterlogged? sometimes a heating pad or jars that got splashed with water when they were sterilized will have areas that will not colonize- b/c either the substrate is too wet ot too dry. ready to birth? id wait a week after growth stops completely before you think about birthing. you can always cut the uncolonized parts of the cake off while being as clean as possible, you want to make sure all of the uncolonized areas are cut off or you have a huge risk of contamination. you can crumble and case these cakes, or try see if theyll fruit as cakes. gluck

Xazia, I too would wait an additional week, with jars turned upside dow, so air can get to the bottom, which sometimes makes a vacuume -like seal, prohibiting groth- If after a week, the area is still uncolonised, cut it off, and case the rest...only time will tell, and its good exp for the next time...Kepp us posted -OoD

i believe at one point i did overheat my jars. i had them in a cabinet above an under-cabinet light fixture in my kitchen. this was the first three days after innoculation. when i got my thermometer i put it in the cabinet it 110 deg!!! i immediately took the jars out. but after that i had water damage and water droplets on the sides of the jars. so you guys think i should turn my jars upside down???? will this speed things up? i have loosened the bands, is that enough? thanx!

thermal death limits have been established at 106 degrees F - TMC, p 197. though the temp may have been 110 in the cabinet, the thermal death limits only refer to the colonized part. overcooked substrate could also be a reason- from what i understand, youre having a problem with the bottom colonizing- which may just be b/c you dried out the substrate when it was so hot.
