Blueing
    #398098 - 09/19/01 08:51 AM (23 years, 4 months ago)

I just birthed my 1/2 pint cakes about 4 or 5 days ago. I realized recently that I should have wait until they were pinning, but I didn't know that at the time. Instead I birthed them when they appeared fully colonized. Yesterday I looked at them and they are patchy dark blue on the top. It dosn't look or smell like a contam. Am I doing anything wrong? I use perlite for humidification and I have an air pump attached to an air stone placed in a glass of water for extra humidity/fresh air. I mist and fan it 2 or 3 times a day. What could be wrong?
Thanks in advance.

If it's not manmade, it's not a drug.

I don't know about waiting for pinning, but everything I
have read says the new grower should allow appx
a week after full colonization before birth. Haven't
seen anything saying I need to wait for pinning.
I have also read that blueing can be from touching your
cakes. I'm a newbie though, so maybe I'm wrong.

If the bluing doesn't spread and/or goes away and it doesn't smell bad, I would think it's just bruising. I think you're good to go. Just my 2cents, I'm still new too.
