Anaerobic organisms
    #3975694 - 03/27/05 10:24 AM (18 years, 10 months ago)

I have no idea where this fits on the Shroomery or even it if fits on the Shroomery.

My questions is about obligate anaerobes. I understand they die in the presence of oxygen but from what I've seen their respiration process involves oxygen albeit bound up in a molecule. Is their any life form found on Earth which can live with an absolute lack of oxygen. Not simply gaseous oxygen but a lack of oxygen bound to any molecule in or outside of the life form.

if you have any type of biology background, look up Anaerobic glycolysis. If not give me a PM and mayber we can chat.

No I don't but wouldn't glycolysis involve a sugar which would have oxygen atoms?

i see where you're heading with that. obligate anaerobes will live without the presence of free oxygen. But the answer to your question I believe is No. One way or another, an O atom is involved.

Thanks. I thought their was a theory of methane based life forms which would live with a complete lack of oxygen.

I guess that oxygen is just a little bit important.

I know what you're talking about, a type of archeabacteria called methanogens. I'll look into it.

they use CO2, so your answer is still no.

If there isn't a place for this type of discussion on the Shroomery, there should be. Biology is awesome.

Methanogens, Halophiles, Thermophiles. All archaea bacteria. Methanogens use hydrogen and release methane. Thermo = extreme heat they oxidize sulfur. Halophiles = high salt concentration have a unique form of photosynthesis. Methanogens maybe fit your definition best, either way its pretty interesting.

No, not unless we find a life-form that can live without H2O which seems reaaaallllllly unlikely on this planet.

Brock Biology of Microorganisms (Madigan, Martinko, Parker) is a great reference for all things microbial

sure, look up the krebs cycle, its the process your body uses to turn 1 glucose molecule into adenosine triphosphate(ATP) or energy. anerobic cellular respiration is normal in small amounts but to much will cause lactic acidosis which is not good. i only know about it in the body, i have no clue about other organisms.
