a little help

i just found out the substrate in the jars should be 1/2" from the top of the rim of rim and mine go to the very top. how bad is this and should i take uit out. WHAT DO I DO?

as far as i know thats all just personal preference. i cant really think of a reason why it would matter other than more verticle growth.. i say leave it be

the half inch at the top is where you would put dry verm to help keep out contams.. if you filled it all the way you wont have a problem but may be more at risk to contams getting to the cake

yea i actually gave about 1/2in to the top in my 1pint jars, and by the time they reached 100% i had myc growth on the bottoms of the lids. crazy i say!

Ok..Verm. at the top(dry verm) acts as a barrier against contams....
W/o it or filters (polyfil/tyvek) is like going into battle w/o a sword and sheild, no very smart IMO....

You have to get syringes anyways, might as well re-do them...

Make sure you wip the inside w/ something dry like a towel...otherwise you're leaving a "bridge" for contams...Good luck

If you have tyvek over it then you'd be ok, but brf colonizes to slowly so u'd have way to much gas exchange and you'd have crusty sub. at the top, lol, ill stop confusing you now.
