Please smack some sense into me if need be
    #3977777 - 03/27/05 09:05 PM (19 years, 24 days ago)

So far my first grow using PF cakes hasn't been going to well.  7 of the 8 jars were contaminated.  We have one good one left that is beginning to pin, and is being dunked tonight.  Tomorrow we will birth it into a 3 liter bottle.

Now for my question.  2 of the 7 contaminated jars weren't very contaminated, but just had a small spot.  One was a grayish mold (not cobweb), and the other was a very dark brown mold (Black mold?).  Tonight I sanitized a spoon, and proceeded to remove the moldy spots from both jars, then burned the bare mycelium to help close it up.

Am I completely wrong in thinking that these might be okay to eventually eat?  What I am hoping is that this removal eradicated the contamination from the jars.  If this (hopefully) happens, and the cakes are mold free from now on, is it safe to eat from these?

I am aware that black mold can be deadly, but I'm not sure about the grayish mold.

Please, your assistance would be greatly appreciated! =0)

Thanks for the quick reply, but of course this isn't the kind of reply I'm looking for.  I am wanting a reply to say I am A-okay!  :smirk:   (I will definitely take your idea into consideration though).

Anyone else have some thoughs on this?

I tried scooping out contams on my first casing, hoping and hoping that it would be okay. It just came back twice as bad.

Just chuck 'em and say "fuck 'em"! It isn't worth the risk to your health or to your other cakes which could also get contaminated. You can always do more jars.

Go for it, have fun. You're birthing them into 3 litre bottles so you don't have much to lose. Can't really get other cakes. If you did remove all of the contam, who know's. I don't know about burning it. Next you might want to try filling the surgically removed piece with verm. mixed up with hydrogen peroxide and distilled water. This should help keep contam's away.

Awesome, thanks for all the helpful ideas and comments everyone. I'm going to go ahead and go with what HippieChick said and try them out in the bottles...see if there is a small chance they will survive. Even then I will be careful and catious when it comes down to eating them. Verm/peroxide/water sounds good to, I'll be doing that.

G'night everyone..everyone on this end of the world. =0)

Make sure to mix the water, 10 parts distilled water to 1 part 3% hydrogen peroxide. Good Luck.
