what to do with spent cakes and casings
    #3976956 - 03/27/05 07:54 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Ive heard of some people taking all their spent cakes and casings, crumbling them like in a bucket or trashbag and mixing with wet vermiculite. Then after the vermiculite is colonized with mycelium, add a casing layer and fruit or maybe it would be better to use it as spawn for an outdoor bulk grow or bulk grow. Anyone have any experiences doing this or have any better uses for their spent cakes other than trash.
thanks

If you have a compost pile? Start a secondary one next to it. Layer some compost, dump out spent casings on top, cover with more compost. You never know what might pop up - towards fall.

I'd make a compost pile if I knew what to throw in it

Manure, straw, dry leaves, veggy kitchen waste, spoiled fruit, a very few grass clippings (spread out & mixed in) is basic beginnings of a compost pile.

I tried crumbling substrate and mixing it into my worm bed, which was under the kitchen sink. Before I go any further I should say: Don't try it.

The idea was great on the surface. There are still nutes in the mix, and the worms can probably eat yummy mycelium too. Turns out they thrived on the stuff. In return I'd get castings, which are supposed to be great manure for substrates. The plan gave me a warm fuzzy circle-of-life, mother earthy feeling. Other old hippies are probably getting all tingly just reading it.

Then the green demon bit me in the ass. All my stuff was going green at the speed of light. I cleaned and scrubbed and bleached and threw out any food that was even a little iffy. You have probably guessed by now that the contamination vector was under my sink, happily puffing out spores. The whole worm bed was grass green. Out it went, with hundreds of head of legless livestock.

I guess this is reversed. You asked what to do with the stuff and I told you what not to do. It might save someone who had the same idea.
