    #3975594 - 03/27/05 09:37 AM (19 years, 5 days ago)

I was looking at one of agar's pictures in his sig and it got me thining. Are there any species of mushroom that grow underwater? I'm not even looking for a psychoactive species.

mushroom corals, not edible but they still look cool in actinic lighting. I'll link to some pics in a min.

How is something like that identified as a mushroom? Do they sporulate and if so are mushrooms the only fungus(?) that sporulate?

In a much broader sense, mushroom is applied to any visible fungus, or especially the fruiting body of any fungus. The technical term for the spore-producing structure of "true" mushrooms is the basidiocarp.

Hmm guess I kind of found an answer.

That is "coral", that looks sort of like a mushroom, BUT ISN'T.

I know of NO underwater species of actual mushrooms.

true, they aren't a true mushroom since there is no mycelium or sporulation. they are kinda cool to look at when viewing your other shrooms tho :P

its not a fungus. The mushroom corals will actually move around the tank in search of the best h20 flow and light for its needs and feeding. I don't know of any fungus that can move itself like that.

From what I've read a mushroom is just the fruiting body of a fungus, I guess similar to the orange from an orange tree. It's not a seperate animal, plant or fungus. Is that correct?

I know those coral are not fungi. What i had meant was that are you saying there is no such thing as underwater fungi? There are a lot more fungi than just mushrooms. You're correct, a mushroom is the fruit of the phyla basidiomycota. There are many other phylums in the fungi kingdom that do not produce mushrooms. With that being said, there are underwater fungi, no they don't produce fruit bodies called mushrooms.

next time you see someone with ringworm or athletes foot, let me know if you see mushrooms pop up out of their arm/foot.

see what i was getting at?

I thought this would be a good place to mention slime molds, even though they're not really molds but protists (from http://www.dr-bob.org/babble/books/20041006/msgs/469094.html):

Quote:

...
As it turns out, the slime mold (Dictyostelium discoideum) has done something far more mysterious, a trick of biology that had confounded scientists for cenruries... For that is no disappearing act on the garden floor. The slime mold spends much of its life as thousands of distinct single - celled units, each moving seperately from its other comrades. Under the right conditions, those myriad cells will coalesce again into a single, larger organism, which then begins its leisurely crawl across the garden floor, consuming rotting leaves and wood as it moves about. When the environment is less hospitable, the slime mold acts as a single organism; when the weather turns cooler and the mold enjoys a large food supply, : "it" becomes a "they". The slime mold oscillates between being a single creature and a swarm.

Wikipedia--Slime Mould--has a bit more scientific explanation.

Pretty cool shit

there is slime molds (P. Myxomycota) and water molds (P. oomycota), both of which are kinda protists and kinda fungi. Which is where I was heading. I was hoping someone would come in with them without me just saying it.

There are several hundred species of marine fungi actually. Perhaps they don't produce mushrooms in the way we see them, but then again, the purpose of a fruit body is to drop spores. That would not be the most effecient way to do it underwater. Do a Google for 'marine fungi'.
