Buffers
    #3975219 - 03/27/05 06:46 AM (12 years, 5 months ago)

I posted this back awhile ago...But this time i'l go into more detail and less clustered looking.

Hydrated lime would be a....short term. buffer?..Right?
And calcium carboante would be a long term...

What are some other buffers like these?
Couldn't find anything helpful, any links would be kool, i can read :smirk:

I think I prefer to see them in not as long term/short term but in the tme it
takes for them to begin working, in which case the hydrated lime and calcium
carbonate are short acting (assuming they are powdered) where as oyster shells
and egg shells need more time to break down

Wow, i thought calcium carbonate was long term...hmmm...

That'd be used on something like peatmoss correct?

I wanted to bump my neutral Ph up just a bit, it's coir/verm....Bacteria likes more acidic subs and myc. likes it more base, should I use a lil bit in my casing layer or no?
Or need more info.?

it is somewhat a slow acting buffer, again, if it's powdered it'll take less time
and yes, for casings with peat moss it will work alter the PH to your liking
as for acidity, I colonized 50/50 WBS and unbrewed Coffee grounds but got no
fruits, mycelium will colonize just about anything if given the chance

I don't know about jiffy mix, but hydrated lime generally IS calcium carbonate or equivalent. It is not a buffer. It will raise the ph. A buffer is used to resist changes in ph. An excellent buffer is gypsum. For peat based casings, I add 1/2 tablespoon of hydrated lime per cup of peat in the mix. Don't count the verm when figuring out how much lime to use. For coir(which I hate as a casing material) use half that amount.
