Another thread about finch seed...
    #397515 - 09/18/01 12:40 PM (22 years, 6 months ago)

A friend just bought some Penningtons Wild Bird Seed from Wal-mart. Planning on using in pint jars. I have done some searching and there are different opinions about whether you should soak or steep. Please enlighten us as to which method you have had the most success with.

My friend is also planning on putting some verm in with the seed to regulate moisture. Does she put in dry verm with the soaked/steeped seed or should it be damp?

One more question, she would like to make this shakable to speed colonization, is this what people do? If so how far should she fill the jar with substrate?

Thanks for any help, most appreciated.

The way my friend does hers is to steep the birdseed first until it almost doubles it's volume. Next add about a 1/4 cup vermiculite to every cup of seed, but you can vary this as much as you like. Mix well together in a bowl and fill your jars about 1/2 full. Then pressurize. YES you need to keep the mixture light and fluffy to aid in fast colonization.:)

So AFOAF was wondering if the birdseed method provides more nutrition then the PF method. Do the shrooms get bigger then with BRF and verm? Also she is planning on casing the birdseed with 50/50, is this OK?

Thanks

make sure you rinse the seed well. it has that 'bird-kot' stuff that makes jars look like you added elmer's glue to them.

Thats a hard one.  The size really comes from a measure of things. You have genetics, moisture, available growing medium. etc. It( substrate ingredients)  does however IMO  aid in the development of more robust and healthy mushrooms. Also to help support this. My friends most potent  fruits came from when she grew them on compost and wheatstraw. The main reason why she choses whole brown rice over brown rice flour  or birdseed is the fact that its extremely difficult at times to get the water to flour or birdseed ratio correct. And to keep it aerated while the mycelia grow. But I'll will leave the choice to you. Birdseed, rice, BRF all work well, the trick is finding the recipie that works for you.
