60/40 Verm/Coco necessary to increase ph?
    #3973259 - 03/26/05 06:48 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I'm ready to case my rye jars, I was originally going to use peat moss and vermiculite, but now I'm leaning towards coco coir and vermiculite. I want to avoid any possible pH problems..oyster shell is hard for me to find at a good price and is not immediately bioavailable, hydrated lime is too tricky for a beginner and I cannot find limestone flour.

I read through the 60/40 verm/coco tek and it says that oyster shells can be added but is this really necessary? The pH should be about neutral without any additives as the pH of coco is 5.5-6.5 and the pH of vermiculite is neutral.

Thanks guys and gals,it's because of these forums that I've even managed to get to the casing stage.

Not really necessary. Oyster shell could help out with future flushes, but not before then. Good Luck.

Thanks guys. Wouldn't you need a ton of egg shells to make enough buffer? I don't know if I could be that patient, grinding up hundreds of egg shells! They sell oyster shell at pet stores, it's a reptile supplement. I've only been able to find it in small containers that are way too expensive for the quantity. I'm going to try and find it in the bird section, I'm pretty sure they use it with parrots.

you only need like a tablespoon of that powder for a quart of casing.... all that powder came from about 10 eggshells....

Hey NMS...

What's the ratio?...(10:1 ,5:1 ect)...

And what's are long term buffers (in terms of substance, like calcium carbonate for example...

And what are some short term buffers?

Long term is better for neurtal casings and helps w/ later flushes and short term is good for casings that need their Ph changed, like peat moss, correct?
