caseing question?
    #3973155 - 03/26/05 06:26 PM (12 years, 30 days ago)

Have been reading about casings just wanted to know if i am geting it right. First get a pan and clean wih alchol. Put a dry layer of verm and them put a layer of broken up colinized subtrate (i am guessing PF cakes work just fine) over that. then put a caseing mix over it and cover with tin foil. when the mecylium start to reach the surface put it into a terrarium and they will pinn and grow. Is this correct, leaving anything out?

Yes. Simple huh? :smirk:

Might want to look up "overlay" and yea, that's about right, there's killer teks on here about how to set-up your casing, look for em and ck em out.

The only thing you might want to look into is how deep to do your mix. Other than that, you got it.

I shall be doing my first casing soon. Very Soon.

I still don't quite understand how you are supposed to fruit a casing. can you fruit a casing in a Rubbermaid container with a perlite bottom just like you would a cake? Or do you have to fruit casings differently? Also as far as incubating a casing does the incubator have to be humid?

ya i looked that up, as long as i uncover it and put it in terrarium when i start seeing mecylium it will not overlay, correct? Also, after i sterilize the casing mix and put it on top of the meylium wont it just become contaminated because it will just be exposed the the open air while it put it onto the mecylium.

Actually, it's not a layer of "dry" vermiculite. The vermiculite should be at field capacity, moisture wise, isn't that correct boy's?

It's not good. It's when your mycelium colonizes your casing layer, thus hindering it pretty much useless. Search on it. Good Luck.

What causes overlay? Temperature humidity co2?

I geuss a little of both. When you start to see pins forming on your casing, you want to lower your humidity, somewhere around 85-92%, I believe, and make sure your casing is getting plenty of fresh O2, fanning. These conditions will help induce fruiting and not vegetative growth. Good Luck.

Tub in a tub works best IMO. As far as humidity I've always covered my casings during their casing run (when the myc colonizes the casing layer) this not only holds in need moisture but also keeps the CO2 levels high(optimum) during the run. read this if you haven't already:

Now by colonizing the casing layer that is referring to just below the surface, once there it's into the fruiting chamber. And by just under the surface that is referring to immediately below the surface to slight breakouts on the surface. GL

Casing - A layer of something(verm./coco coir, striaght verm. ect ect) non-nutritious that provides moisture to the substrate and protects it from contams. There's another reason but I forget it.

<>ya i looked that up, as long as i uncover it and put it in terrarium when i start seeing mecylium it will not overlay, correct?<>
Yuph.

I put a layer of "moist" verm. on the bottom, it's just there to provide extra moisture to the sub. for later flushes, works well IMO..

What exactly is a Tub In Tub and how do I make one? I was just going to fruit this batch as cakes but at the last second I decided I would try a casing. My jars are finished now so I need get stuff ready fast. As far as my incubator goes all it is is a cardboard box with a hole cut out of the top and a heat lamp that gives off no light hanging over it. Its dark and stays at about 85-87. does it need to be humid inside my incubator? Is it OK to fruit them in a Rubbermaid with just a perlite bottom? Thanks for the help I really appreciate it.

Well I looked through all of the casing teks and none of them seemed to really answer these questions. They all just talk about preparing the casing and different subtrates.
