Religion is the escape of being human
    #3971427 - 03/26/05 02:11 AM (19 years, 7 days ago)

Religion plays a perfect role in providing guidelines in ignoring our instincts and living by a social, moral code. If all of our common negative behaviors are merely inheritied adaptive traits, then these traits are species-wide and are therefore "human" nature. This nature is not always a viable solution when the environment of the humans is subject to change. The adaptive solutions that worked many thousands of years ago may not work for the culture that has sprung up in an amount of time that pales in comparison to an evolutionary time scale. Culture has exploded in size and complexity in the last six thousand years while evolution has taken many millions. Many of our traits are maladaptive in a socially moral culture that grows at such a speed. And that is why religion tries to build a framework on which to live in order to ignore being a human and become a member of society. It is an overarching society framework to mold humans.

For an example, look at the Seven Deadly Sins. These are all traits that are merely being expressed in an environment that is not conducive to their abilities. Gluttony is a good survival trait when food is scarce. Get as much food as you can so you can live and be healthy. But due to human culture bypassing the threat of not having enough food, the idea of gluttony is a bad one. There is too much food to go around, and if you eat as much as you please it has a more harmful effect.

Lust is conducive to species continuation. Males in other species often mate and continue onward, impregnating as many females as possible. Obviously some animals are an exception, but their monogamy is neccessary for the growth of their more complex offspring. Lust aids the animal in the neverending reproductive hunt.

Religion needs to be dropped down in social importance. Society needs to stop worrying about petty ideological differnces and start thinking as a species. Problems that affect all of us, as humans - not as a fragmented society with different agendas. The bigger problems of life (AIDS for example) could be toppled much quicker if there was some cooperation for humanities sake, not for an antiquated moral structure set up to remove humanity from the humans.

religion is one of many ways for people to find peace and contentment in their lives. if it works for you, follow religion, if it doesn't, try something else. some people meditate, some people do sport, some art, some eat acid etc etc.

In my religion we utilize human sacrifice under the moon. We worship a goat known to us as "Carlos". In addition to the human sacrifice he also requires General Tzao's chicken.

Over time some of us have come to realize that the human sacrifice is a mere formality- the chinese food is what he's really after.

Right on Fred, Good post. IMO if the human race survives the next 100 yrs. No one will understand if you say the word religion.

If they do, they'll most likely be in a cave.

But to each his own. That's how evolution works it seems.

Soes eating, sex and violence make you human? A bird has those too, a fish has those too, so how come these things make you human?
What makes you human is that which other beings do not have. What makes a bird a bird? Not food or sex, but wings and a beak.
