Colored mushies
    #3972020 - 03/26/05 12:37 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

I was just thinkin, If i put food coloring mixed in with the substrate mix would i yeild colored mushrooms. I could see it's possible considering mushrooms are made mostly of water. I figure you could do this by using a couple drops of food coloring while mixing up with the substrate, or possible pressure cooking with food colored water. (dumb idea?) It would be pretty crazy to see some green mushies.

very interesting, yeah, go ahead and mix some food coloring into your substrate...i think it may work...don't pick blue for obvious reasons. how about red...or green (don't hate me).

Hate to be a buzz kill, but if you do a little searching you will find this idea pops up quite frequently with little success.

try putting a good amount of food coloring. I would put orange to make the shrooms looks more sparkling gold or purple. purple always make shrooms look amazing

Two problems and one solution is what I got here.

First, adding colors to the substrate might get you confused when it comes to contams. You don't want to miss a contam because your substrate was the same color. Also, you would have to use a bunch of food coloring, and a lot of it might be wasted in the center of the cake.

Why don't you wait until they start pinning, then drip concentrated food coloring right at the base of the pins into the myc.? This way you aren't wasting food coloring in unnecessary places, and you know where you put the coloring so you won't have to worry about mistaking it for a contam.

Good luck and good idea!
Peace

edit: Make sure to sterilize the coloring before you do this!

Ill give it shot. I think im gonna go with DirtyHippies approach. food coloring isnt needed in side the substrate, and that would also make it confusing. The jars are colonizing so it'll be a little bit before I can let you guys lknow. It will be interesting to see.
