Sphagnum Moss Tek
    #3971381 - 03/26/05 03:44 AM (13 years, 29 days ago)

Anybody tried this? It seems like a good idea but I want to know if it's really worth it because it probably gets a little messy and uses a lot of space.

I do on the other hand have like 25lbs. of peat on my back porch

This is the only shit i will case with, if you read paul stamets books this is his favorite, it holds 3 times as much water, the only thing about the teks on here that I dont agree with is the amount of pearlite to use, I have experimented with this stuff a great deal and i have found that if you use this recipe it works the best
3 parts moss
2 parts verm
1/2 to 3/4 lime, chalk or oyster shell
1/4 teaspoon gypsum
you need lime because peat moss is acidic so you need a ph buffer for healthy growth
the gypsum is recommended for bacteria prevention and I normally sterilize instead of pasturize by putting it in a dish with a lid in the oven for 15 mins at 350 deg
here is a picture of a casing a made a couple of weeks ago this one got out of hand casing was 3/4 in thick and was only incubating for 3 days
this stuff supports rapid rhizomorphic myc growth I had to recase this and its fruiting right now. Peat is awesome case material man!

if you're planning on using it for a substrate, there is very little nutrition in peat moss

I'm not talking about peat as substrate I'm talkin bout the Sphagnum moss tek http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7929 where myc will extend onto the moss and supposedly give the mushers tons more water and fatten the hell outta them
