verm layer in jar bottom
    #3969814 - 03/25/05 07:49 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I've heard that adding a few tablespoons of vermiculite in the bottom of the jar can help with colonization times especially for the area on the bottom of the jar which usually takes the longest time to colonize. Has anyone tried this and found it to be helpful? Should you use wet or dry vermiculite and how much did you use. Also, I heard somewhere that when you birth the cakes they should be in the same orientation as they were when they were inoculated in the jars. Does it really matter if the cakes are upside down or not when you birth them? Do the pins get confused which way is up and will that hurt the mycelial network?

Won't jurt it...
Light tells them where to go...
Dry verm. on top for a barrier...
Dry on bottom to collect Excess water... Has nothing to do w/ colonization, just keeps water from collecting...But if you do you sub. right and put in the right amount of water then you don't need it...I used it once, but i critiqued how much water i put in my sub...

I just covered the bottom "lightly" w/ dry Sterile verm...
