jar size questions/ colonization time
    #3969788 - 03/25/05 07:44 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Where I live i could only find cases of regular half pint, and widemouth pint jars.
I really dont want to have to pay shipping on jars off the internet so my question is should i use regular half-pint jars or do you think using widemouth or regular pint jars would be a problem for a newbie. If i understand correctly, the advantage of using widemouth half pint jars is that they colonize quicker than the regular half-pint jars and a hell of a lot faster than pint jars. Whats everyone's advice, should i go for regular halfpint, regular pint, or widemouth pint. I dont really feel that a slow colonization will be a problem as im planning on using CAMBODIAN and HAWAIIAN spores from ralph which supposedly have an extremely fast colonization time. Also, i had the idea if using the pint jars, i might cut them in half and fruit them like normal half-pint cakes. ive heard some people increase yields by cutting cakes in half. I know there is a slight risk of contamination when you cut, so can you also dunk and roll when cutting cakes. If one were doing half cakes, im guessing it would be better to use widemouth pint jars rather than regular pint jars because of the increased surface area, am i correct? Has anyone tried this and is it actually more productive to fruit 1 pint jar as two half pint cakes? Ive learned a lot by reading everyones posts and i thank all of you

As far as colonization time a 1/2pt jar is a 1/2pt jar.
As far as birthing a cake.

A cake will not drop out of a regular 1/2pt jar.Have you been reading about casings?

Use the pint jars. They do take longer but you will be able to remove them as a whole cake.

Stay cool, they will grow

I thought the half pint tapered jars would allow you to remove it as a whole cake. I think ill go with the widemouth pint jars and cut em in half. then ill have 24 half cakes. or maybe ill case some of them. can i case with just vermiculite or should i really use a coco coir/vermiculite/lime mixture to case.

Straight vermiculite can be used but not highly recommended. Vermiculite with peat or coco coir works well though. If you use coir, you don't really need the lime, oyster shell might help you out a little on future flushes. Good Luck.
