Heavy Metals & Soils
    #3969290 - 03/25/05 05:13 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

I have a question about soil.
Is it necessary to use organic soil for consumables?
I've read several soil tec's, but nowhere do I read that it is important to obtain organic soils.

For those of you that don't know about heavy metals, they bioaccumulate. That means that nasty elements, like mercury, are taken into the plant as it grows. The mercury isn't metabolized by the plant, so it gets passed to you when you eat it.

So basically I'm asking about the safety of soil mixures- if there is anything I should avoid.

Thanks.
Happy Growing.

yes, many plants (including weed) do suck the heavy metals and thats not good for who consumes it.
just avoid shooting your soil, i doubt any commercial mix would come with such hazardous stuff.
if you can compost your own mix, even better.

Yes but I'm guessing there is going to be always trace amounts, plus I know from experience u shouldn't use some chemicals on edibles such as fungicide, which when i had my run in with fungus gnats i used. Ended up throwing all of the edible plants away. Now i could be looking to deeply into the word but organic soil? what would not be organic soil? I don't want to sound like an idiot but I just assumed all soil was organic maybe decaying soil? Please clarify for me thanks.

Yeah, "organic soil" sounds redundant! Maybe I'm being dumbass. I didn't know what else to call it, though. I was just trying to describe a soil type that may be better than another by having less man-made chemicals in it.

lots of stuff including some organics have heavy metals...alaska fish emulsion, all alaska products in fact...osmocote is what is used in miracle gro...but it is gone within 3 months (perfect veg time). I would guess a lot of products using bird guano contain heavy metals too. Just flush, flush, flush, the soil, and try to shop around or make your own ferts
