First post, second cultivation attempt.

Hello all, first I'd like to say that this is a great community and the sheer mass of information on this site and forum is overwhelming.
Now on to the matters at hand. About two years ago a friend of mine, and the guy who introduced me to tripping, gave me a couple of leftover syringes he had from his grow experiment. So I decided to give it a shot. Read up on various sites, did my research, collected my supplies then went to work. Well after about 3 and a half weeks my BRF jars got contaminated, they were almost completely colonized too . So here I am a little more grown up, and a little bit wiser. I am going to give this another shot as I want some good psychodelics to share with some friends, also I find it so much fun to do projects like this. So enough background bullshit and onto the questions. I've read all the FAQ's and numerous posts on the forum, I know the different methods, I'm just looking for some simple advice.
1. For the grow chamber, what is the best way to deliver humidity with the lowest possible chance of introducing contams? I have an ultrasonic humidifier that I've hooked up to my chamber, but I'm a little worried because I hear that the humidifiers can house some nasty bacteria. Also, if using an aquarium air tank is recommended, then wouldn't I need to filter the air going into the chamber somehow? I have a dog so I know the air in my room isn't the cleanest.
I want to get some decent yields. This is only my second time trying to grow so yes I am a noobie. However I am also quite scientifically minded. I have no problems understanding procedures and following them accurately. So onto the next question.
2. I wanted to try a substrate other than BRF. Maybe popcorn or rye. I know I can find rye online to buy and can get popcorn at the grocery, so both are available. Also I want to try casing since I know this gives higher yields. Should I not attempt this on my first possible grow? I've even considered buying some mushroom compost online and trying to do spawn casings. I just don't wanna spend a ton of time on this to only get enough mushrooms for maybe 2 people to trip. I'm not interested in growing bulk amounts or anything like that, just want good yields from my time invested.
Thank you all for any feedback. If this was a stupid post then please be light on bashing me. I'm a little green behind the ears

Go for the casings dude...well worth the extra work and low risk if you do it by the books.
Welcome and good luck (or as my old geometry teacher used to say, "you don't need good luck, you need good skills!" )

Welcome
Try Wild Bird Seed. Easier than rye, and less expensive. Make yourself some quick filter tops w/ PolyFill and you have instant grain jars. Spawn them to horse poo (recommended) or fruit them as is. If you are going to fruit the substrate directly, I'd recommend rye in that case. Casings can go directly inside a tub with no external humidification needed. Misting the casing and the chamber walls is all you need--no need to fuss with humidifiers, etc.

yeah, definitely try the casings. I just tried my first grow recently and went straight to casing. I even got to the pinning stage, but then my fucking casing contaminated! Oh well, shrooms lost knowledge gained.
Anyways, casings are way easy. Haven't tried spawning though, just breaking up PF cakes.
Good luck!
GO NOOBS!!

Thank you all for your great responses. I think I may try using rye the first time, as I won't be spawning. Although I did find a website to buy "mushroom compost" that I could spawn with. I don't think I can get horseshit anywhere around here.
So scratch the humidifier, and just spray for humidity? I don't need to use perlite in the grow chamber for casings? Also, the birdseed, is there a particular type that is recommended or just any mixed seed?

Try out Tennessee Stud Substrates from the sponsor list. Much cheaper than mushroom compost.

well if you are spraying for humidity, don't make the same mistake I did, which was making the casing too moist and then underestimating the contaminating potential of open air in your house. Now I have an air stone bubbling in a glass of H2O2 solution inside the FC. Now I've got fresh air and humidity all automated along with a light on a timer! I don't have to do shit!!
I hardly ever open it up, and when I do I spray Oust air sanitizer around the room, wear a face mask, have my HEPA running right next to me, and try to keep time in open air to a minimum. FUCK CONTAMS!

I've got a couple quick questions.
I keep hearing people talk about these bubble stones. I've never heard nor seen of them. Where can I find them? Sounds like a great idea, cause you can minimize contam posibilities like you said.
I also would like to know if theres a specific type of wild birdseed I should get for my substrate. I'm trying to write my procedure out on paper and all supplies/cost and construction of incubator and grow chamber. I'm gonna be using the "quart way" method with a couple adjustments of course.

just go to the pet store and ask for them. I think they are just called air stones, bubble stones, bubble wands, etc. All they do is diffuse the air into little tiny bubbles instead of big heaping bubbles that splash water all over your shit (my mistake).

They're good for getting o2 into your chamber and they help dispell co2, just need to put two 1/2in holes in the top of your terrium.... Fish stores have them and so does wally world in the fish section (right next to the pet food)
Pm me what you've got so far, in terms of your set-up and such Maybe i could give you better details, posting it and then reading your Q's and then re-posting
