Quart Jar Method???
    #3968511 - 03/25/05 01:52 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

I just came upon this method while looking around at different grow guides. Here is the link for it it's the "Quart Jar Way-Revisited"
http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7928

My question is has anyone tried this and had decent results? I would love to see some pics of people's jars full of mushrooms, if possible. If anyone has any info. on this tek i would greatly appreciate it.

The Quart Jar way rocks. You can also case the cake in the jar if you like. Here are some pictures of cased and not cased:

Without casing:

With Casing:

As you can see the cased jar has many more fruits. Also though the cased picture is in a 1/2 gallon jar. There are over 60 healthy pins in there.

Do you just use whole brown rice grains if you are going to do it without casing? Also, what ratio of rice to water would you suggest i mix? thanks

Good for stealth but a casing would blow the yields away....

Yes I have used WBR for for all my non-cased jars, though I imagine the rye will work just as well if not better. I have only cased my rye jars. As for water ratio it really depends on your rice, but I used 1.5:1-1.75:1 water:rice. You want the rice cooked but not too sticky and definately not runny. Excess water really slows things down and promoted bacterial contam, yuk.

Exactly why I recommend to put an inch or so of casing in the jar. the pic above is a 4.5in.x4.5in. footprint and it has 60+ mushs. Not bad for a jar.

Lool...yea they do rock

You do have a casing in the car but i bet it doesn't get very good air exchange, I'm guessing you don't have the room for a fruiting chamber or you just don't want to bother, or you can't afford it, am I right?

Well I have a MycoDome but i am using it for Shitake etc.. I only need enough for myself and friends and the jars give me much more than I need. Also my wife might get a little pissed if I take over the house with mushies. So for me not covert but easy and low profile.

So you just put about 1.5-2 inches of rice in the jars, then mix 1.5 times as much water in. so it would be say 1 cup rice to 1.5 cups water? Then PC, cool, and inoculate right?

you dont need air exchange during colonization, but once fruiting starts how do you get sufficient air exchange?

Is there not a high chance of contams, since you have to open the lid to inoculate, and leave the lid on loosely during the entire colonization/fruiting stages?

Use the quart jar tek at the link you provided above. I followed those direction exactly my first few runs and it went great.

for a quart jar it says 1/4 cup rice to 3/4 cup water.

ok thanks, i didnt know if that was just saying for ever 1/4 cup rice you use 1/2 cup water or what. But i guess you only use 1/4 cup rice per jar.

Hey one last question Pelon. Do you have to tilt the jars 2 times a day for air exchange even when it is colonizing? or is that only for when the pinning starts, and you start giving them light?

 Agreed...Even if you put a casing layer in that jar...It still does nothing but collect co2(unless u fan)...But it's good as a side grow IMO.

Colonization benefits from co2, no need to "tilt"...You should start giving them fresh air as soon as you introduce them to light, just to let them know that it's time to grow up

And I'd fan, it'd ensure that All/Most co2 would be gone, tilting wouldn't be as reliable...Just fan, it's not that hard and it doesn't take but like 5 seconds...Just my .o2

You mean 2:1 ratio?....If you use 1/4 a cup of rice per jar, then that's 1/4 water as well and 1/2 a cup of verm...Same Brf mix...Nothing different there

And btw, those cased ones worked better b/c they recieved more water, afterall, that is one of the reasons we use them ...
Ok,lol, i'll stop anwsering every goddamn Q in this thread lol. Gl all

the only question i have about your fanning idea is how would i go about it? I would have to take the lid off the jars to fan right? Is that not a good way to get contams in there?

Fanning is something that Lots of people do...

If you have a Big problem with contams then you might not want to, but for the most part, you'll be fine

It's not biggie, I fan all the time and have Yet to get a contam from it...

Just get a cd case of something like a plastic lid and "fan" the jar like it's your face :smirk:

Good luck

-Gnostic

And if you're able...Try the 3-liter method (donno the term...)
But i fan with it was well
Every four hours or so is recommended for P. cubes...

I highly believe that they greatly benefit from fresh air, so i tend to do it a lot...but not to the point where i'm over doing it All the time, b/c it's un-necessary...Gl

I'll find the link and put it in here

damnit..can't find it...Here we go, fuck it

You'll need

1. 3-liter bottle (soda bottle, i get mine at food lion*grocery store*...it's cheap and a big ass bottle)
  Don't get a 2-liter, they're too small

2. Some perlite
3. A plastic divider or something plastic that you can cut
4. Scizzors
5. A fully colonized jar, pints and smaller only, quarts are way to big for this..

Steps.

1. Cut the top off right where it begins to curve.
2. Cut the middle of the bottle out, like 4-5 inches worth.
3. Now, try to put the top inside the bottle and make sure that it doesn't fall striaght in...

Good so far? Awesome

4. Get some perlite, get a collander or a screen, something, and then run water through it. You're doing this to get the perlite wet.
5. Clean your bottle out with some h202 (10ml h2o2 per 100ml's of water, it's a 1:10 ratio)...
6. Put the perlite on the bottom, it'll basically "wick" moisture into the atmosphere and give ur "terrium" some humidity...
7. Swipe the plastic divider/cd, w/e you've got and place it on the bottom, this is where your cake will sit...
Note:**Just make sure that it doesn't cover the Entire bottom...You want to all the perlite to get water into the air, if you cover the bottom then you wont get that lovely effect.**
8. Put it in and put the top in side, and you're done

They say to keep the cap on, i left mine off...Figured it'd get enough air...Turns out that wan't enough, that's when i read up about fanning and starting fanning...

Not sure how many people use this, but it worked for me several times, just fan like every four hours or so, they like the fresh air...No fanning is like me depriving you of oxygen..How would you feel? Wouldn't grow to well would ya :smirk: lol
Gl

If you've got any other Q's, Pm me...

Soul....Not to be an asshole...but i'll take a wild stab at the dark and guess that you Don't hold them upside down...everything would fall out, that's...pretty common sense dude..:smirk:

Just fan it, it's better
