Pan cyan casing problem
    #3968429 - 03/25/05 01:35 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I think i applied too thick casing layer(1-1.5cm) and the mycelium is having a hard time poking thru...its on the 4th day right now, with slight sighns of growth on the sides (very few) which i patched. (...)

What can i do? Should i try to remove some of the casing layer or wait? Should i scratch it off with a fork or something?

:mushroom2:

Mine took awhile as well. I just kept it in the incubator till it was ready.

A very thin layer is all that is needed, as you now know. A casing is required for pans. I believe that the casing, while it may add to humidity and microclimate conditions, is really only required for its bacteria! If you look at the log I have going now, you may notice that dude didn't evenly apply it, or even apply it over the whole surface. Just a few patches of peat (he ran out of verm). These areas should be the only places fruits form. I wouldn't scratch it. Try to just hold the tray upside down to get the excess casing mixture to fall off. Be careful not to touch it, pans contam very easliy ime.

good luck.
Just my opinion...

I had pearlite get into my casing and I turned it over to get rid of it and the mycelium held onto the verm letting all the excess and debris fall, no problems, no bruising either..
