String Quartet covers Dark Side of the Moon
    #3968259 - 03/25/05 10:42 AM (19 years, 8 days ago)

If any of you are in the NYC area, there's a band called the Section Quartet - cellists and violinists - who are going to be playing Mercury Lounge tomorrow night, Saturday 3.26.  They have an early show and a late show, and the early show, at 7 PM, is going to be them covering Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety.  I've seen them at the Mercury once before, smoked a whole bunch and then went to see them cover Radiohead's OK Computer.  It's awesome.  They turn the vocal melodies into music parts and they're just brilliant.

I'm baking brownies tomorrow afternoon for this wonderful event.

thats awsome, has it got to do with the fact that the 23rd was the day it released 32 years ago?

Wow I didn't know that at all, maybe it does! I know a guy that books at Mercury and he booked them to do OK Computer and it was so good, and totally sold out, so they knew they had to work on another good full album to cover. The late night show (Separate ticket) has them covering just a lot of rock and roll - led zeppelin, radiohead, queens of the stone age, muse.

i love muse and radiohead, but pink floyd is in a category of its own. If i acutally get off my lazy ass and get ticks, ill let you know. i gota see if any of my friends want to go.
last question.. is there specific seating or do the people who come earlier get the cosest seats?

Mercury Lounge is a tiny venue, no seats...standing room only, 250 person capacity, I mean really small, with a separate bar room, have to be 21 to go to the show by the way, don't know if you're under that or not.

ok that last question wasnt my last question... ive been to NYC many times but i dont think blazing on the streets is the smartest idea. can you blaze in the place or no? is there any safe place to blaze?

Blazing on the street is definitely possible I mean I'll carry around a batty stuffed to the brim and hit it now and then on nights when I feel like it...but Saturday night is probably one of the worse nights to do that...puffing there is really hard, they're strict about it because after the new smoking laws came into effect a bunch of places got slapped with HEAVY (We're talking like 700-1000 dollar) fines for people smoking inside.

But I live pretty close by.

This was AWESOME. Me and my girlfriend met up with danlennon3 and his friend a little before the show and took some bong rips, and I was flying high (or rather stoned as heavy as granite) off a brownie I'd eaten. We went to the Mercury Lounge and saw the Section Quartet deliver a ridiculously awesome, psychedelic rendition of Dark Side of the Moon, beginning to end in its entirety. What was great was that the arrangements weren't bound to like a "classical" version of Pink Floyd at all, there was also lots of twangy western folkiness. It was sweet, if anyone finds a recording of it I'd love to know.

It was a great time. The day couldn't have been planned any better. We got nice and toked up before the show. Their performance was flawless. What was with that guy "who was on the price is right?" he was so full of himself! I'm not a violent person but i felt like pimp slapping him in the face!

you missed a fun time but theres many other shows in the future.
they used a soundboard type thing for some of the intros such as the bells in Time but very little. They did 99.9% of it with their instruments.
