Does anyone else here watch that amazing HBO show Carnivale? My friend Larry had been talking to me about it forever and during our acid trip this past weekend he gave me DVD-R copies of the entire first season DVD, six discs of awesomeness. It's weird that only 2 episodes are on each disc, but the quality is awesome and that probably explains it.
Anyway, this show is awesome. Taking place in 1934, it's about a young man with strange healing powers named Ben Hawkins who gets picked up in Oklahoma by a mystical traveling Carnival called Carnivale, just as his mother dies and his house is demolished. The characters within the carnival are great, from a blind visionary to a catatonic fortuneteller to a bearded lady. Meanwhile there's a parallel story of a preacher named Brother Justin in California who has visions he believes come from God and also has strange powers. There is a connection between him and Ben Hawkins but neither of them seems to know that, but then again I'm only six episodes into the 12-episode first season.
Check it out!!!
-------------------- Acid doesn't give you truths; it builds machines that push the envelope of perception. Whatever revelations came to me then have dissolved like skywriting. All I really know is that those few years saddled me with a faith in the redemptive potential of the imagination which, however flat, stale and unprofitable the world seems to me now, I cannot for the life of me shake.
