Buy BRF or grind your own?
    #3966495 - 03/24/05 10:28 PM (11 years, 10 months ago)

FOAF has to go pick up some vermiculite and BRF very soon here when his spores arrive. I was wondering if freshly ground brown rice is superior to the pre-ground flour. Any opinions or suggestions?

grinding it is a little cheaper but time consuming. You do the math. Brf is brf no matter if you make it or a company makes it

I prefer to grind my own, not as much for the $ saving's, but I like to grind it a little more coarse than the flour you buy. Makes the cake a little more pourous allowing the mycelium to colonize quicker.

also oxidation would set in once the seeds protective layer is broken. So if you grind your own it might have more nutrients.

you should be looking forward to realizing that brf and verm is a huge pointless mess and that WBS is the way to go. its actually easier because you don't have to measure verm or brf. this is all assuming you are able to do grains and have a pc.

lol, wbs is way more work than brf lol.

Brf= Mix, fill jars, BOIL..Viola...
WBS/ALL GRAINS=Soak(12-24hr),Simmer(some do some dont),rinse,and then Pc, which most people dont have, the majority of people have Pot to use to boil...But yea, It is a bit more nutritious, but it isn't just a mess that doesn't yield anything, i've seen badass brf cakes :thumbup:

Anyways, gl man :thumbup:

WBS=Wild Bird Seed btw

Right on. I'm doing WBS right now. Lot more work and a lot messier.Don't think I'll ever give up my cakes completely, enjoy watching them grow too much. Plus I just completed my second flush on two PESA cakes and yielded 56 and 74 grams wet on one, and 54 and 69 grams wet on the other. If you follow all the TEK's and little tricks, i.e. Double end casing , dunk and roll and inner resevoir tek, you can get some really good results with cakes.

Sadly, you will NEVER get flushes like this off Cakes.

Cased bulk substrate are as much - if not more - fun to watch grow ( and, produce more - by far).

I use millet based bird seed, and also brf (grind it myself for reasons already said)...much faster colo. time.
Both do very well, however I usually end up with abit more from my brf casings. Giving that i'm using the same casing materail for both.
Both have their own good points.
As far as your brf...I'd say grind it up yourself.

Hey, while you're here, can you take a look at the humidifier on my post and let me know what you think, and any good poo links would be appreciated. I searched and didn't come up with a whole lot. Saw you had something good posted the other night. Thanks.

What should you use to grind up the rice? Will a coffee grinder work? I tried using my friends food processor thing and it wouldnt hardly grind the rice up. If I have to buy something I dont want to spend alot of money.

Yes. I bought one specifically for grinding brown rice at my local grocery store for $9.00.

Grinding rice and making cakes sucks, but it is worth the time if you "spawn" the cakes to a bulk substrate.

Using a food processor is a bit of a pain. it will get some of the rice to flour but leave alot of small peices, i use a seive to filter out the large peices and toss those back into the blender and blend it again. And filter out the peices then stick the left over chunks back in ready for the next batch of rice.

it does works just takes a little extra time.

a coffee ginder will make it much easier though, it will get it to a flour, and all of it to a flour
