hunting trouble
    #3965022 - 03/24/05 01:22 PM (19 years, 27 days ago)

Hey guys, I figured in was too cold for mushies in my neck of the woods but since I had nothing better to do I went out on the hunt in southern New Jersey. I have an awesome forest for it near where I live, a mixture of open grass fields to dense forest to streams and low-lying areas (ie spagnum moss and whathaveyou). Found a few interesting items like an old turtle shell and the carcass of a red tailed hawk(kept the skull but turned over the turtle shell so birds could drink out of it). but no real fungi to speak of. The only living fungus I found was this strange looking species growing only on dead birch trees on the ground. It was basically just a large cap attached to the bark with only a little connecting, no real stem. Had no gills on the underside, more of just a spongy substance. It was definately thriving, i removed one and water was dripping out of it. So, i suppose my question is, what is this and is it too early to be mushroom hunting?

What you found was a type of bracket fungi (non active).

We'll need a better description and prefably a good photo to make an ID though.

Sounds like my kind of place.
To answer your question, it is pretty early to find much of anything. I am pretty close to NJ, location wise. The first thing that I usually look forward to is morel season, which should start pretty soon in the spring.

It looks something like that, except for the fact that the underside has a mush more defined spore-releasing area ( im assuming that the bright white fungi in your pic is the bottom)

one more ques. [Re: C4byke]

Should I be scattering cow dung around the areas where I live that I think would be ideal for shroom growth, or a better question would be- what sort of prep work should i do for a natural area- short of planting mycelium?

What sort of mushrooms are you hunting for/planning on growing?

well, in a few months I plan on growing golden teacher, mexican, and treasure coast indoors if my spores ever get here... but outdoors- I really have no idea, anything active I suppose would be a good thing for me, preferably something that grows better in a wetter than normal enviroment. Ive heard subalteus grows on the eastern seaboard?? anything and everything is appreciated

Panaeolus subbalteatus grows in your area but it is found in fields, lawns or on roadsides. Psilocybe graveolens is also listed as growing in your area.

Check out the FAQ for indoor and outdoor cultivation, theres a wealth of info there.

It looks like an old specimen of Piptoporus betulinus which is the same species as the pic I posted.
