why would it be less expressive just because its another medium? i think expression is all in the individual, and any individual can find the right tool to express themselves.
think of it in terms of music. is a bass player less expressive then the lead guitars? vocals are just as expressive as the music it is in harmony with. i think you just have to find the right tool to draw it out.
one of my own
i can assure you that just as much goes in to any digital art as it does working with something like oil and canvas. i remember when people thought using synthesizers wasn't making music, but now there are hardly any bands out there that don't have some kind of synth set up in their music.

Oh, I think it's art but...
this isn't a stupid question. There is room to question what art is and has been defined as. Is photography just a picture producing technology or an idea because that's how it was chosen? Is art just something aestetically pleasing?
I believe it was the Egyptians who had had some of the greatest painters in the world. They could make incredible depictions but were not seen as Artists as we think of them today. They were simply another form of skilled worker.
Picasso and Polluck both made statements with their work. Although there's nothing stopping digital artwork from differentiating itself from simple graphics, in my opinion, much digital artwork is no longer really striving to convey ideas or make any kind of a statement. It's merely make something "cool" looking. Lens flares and such. As much true Art as another cute kitty photograph or syrup skillfully splattered on a plate. This is never what Art and has really been about.
Wow, I'm really sounding harsh. I'm, playing Devil's advocate but intensionally capitalizing Art as a way of indicating the lofty views of art that's been around (exemplified by, say, the Academy or most of the major art movements). Keep expressing yourself and making good art if you did that. I'm not too big on the spacey aspects because it seems too common a theme to me in computer graphics but I think the referenced artwork shows great balance and style.
[Edit] Oh yes, If you observe real paintings, you will realize that the texture, though small, is actually very important to some and cannot be duplicated adaquately through an entirely flat media.
-------------------- ... just some food for thought.

A painting or a photograph or a design (etc) does NOT have to convey some grand or profound statement in order to be deemed as "Art". Dont buy into that. There's plenty of great art in the world, of which doesn't communicate some prolific message through it's design. There has been a plethora of purely impressionistic works created in the history of Art, and many of them are simply beautiful to look at....nothing more, nothing less...and there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with that.
"Art" isn't nearly as complicated to define as some of you silly people are suggesting. It's quite simple in fact.

Art is anything that incites thought. Meaning something to the artist is enough to deem it art.
The ability to observe and appreciate art is the true beauty The art piece serving only as a catalyst of self. Art is what tells me I am beautiful.

I think it's art to a degree...I mean, it's like techno music. I'm a musician, and it could take me weeks even months to compose and prepare music to be recorded. yet, digital music and techno music can be done on the spot in a matter of minutes. trust me, i've done it. i do some digital art, so don't get me wrong. it IS art and requires intelligent and skilled use of the medium (the cumputer) just like as in oil. but i do think, in the end, it's much easier.

Here's some of my computer "art". I used to do a lot of them, but I didnt really feel that computer art is respected by anyone so I stopped doing it.

Damn Blowback, I like some of those alot. Your digital art strikes me as being much more interesting in its creative efforts and design than most digital art posted here.
fuck what others think...if designing these pieces gives YOU some satisfaction then I say keep on creating man.
