Would you raise the Titanic?
    #3963821 - 03/24/05 08:30 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Inspired by my blind dolphin dream.

So, if you had the power, would you raise the Titanic, or leave it.
I would leave it where it is, it doesn't belong to be moved about, plus it's a graveyard for 1000s of people.
Raise the Titanic?

If it didn't require anything, sure, maybe raising it up could allow it to be studied and explored better. The people that died there are long gone anyway, I doubt even their bodies remain in any recognizable fashion by now.

You'd be surprised how well the fridged temperatures where the Titanic sunk perserve bodies.

But don't you think the flesh and bone would just deteriorate with all the years the corpse have been laying down there for? Well, I don't know about the bone, but the skin I'm pretty sure about

I would leave it. I am one of the very few people in the world to actually have held part of the hull from the Titanic. It was a very humbling experience thinking about all of the lives touched by the sinking of ship.

(I was working in a lab, in the mid 90's, that was testing the metal from the hull to try and deterimine why it failed... turned out that the iron had a lot of boron (I think it was boron... this was years ago) in it, and it turned brittle (like glass) when near freezing temperatures. I wasn't involved with this project, just happened to be working in the same room as the people doing the testing.)

It wasn't really anybodies fault... at the time, nobody knew how badly impurities in iron effected it's strength in cold climates.
