Man gets 20 years for sixth DWI conviction
March 24, 2005
news-journal.com

A Kilgore man on Tuesday was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his sixth drunken driving conviction.

A Gregg County jury deliberated for about 35 minutes before returning the maximum sentence for Louis Ray Reeves, who was convicted of drunken driving in 1984, '87, '88, '91 and '96.

Reeves also was convicted of felony drug possession in 1995.

"This sends a very clear message that the people of Gregg County are committed to doing their part to keep our streets safe," Assistant District Attorney Katie Nielsen said in a written statement.

According to a Kilgore police report, Sgt. Tony Stone saw Reeves' brown 1984 Mercury swerving from lane to lane on Texas 31 near Texas 42 at about 2:40 a.m. on June 26.

Stone stopped him for an expired registration tag, and the sergeant could smell an alcoholic odor on Reeves' breath, saw his glassy, bloodshot eyes and noted his extremely slurred speech, the report said.

At first Reeves said he had one or two beers, then admitted to drinking four or five.

Later, after he failed field sobriety tests, he said he had been drinking some gin as well, Stone reported.

The report also said that Reeves appeared to have smoked marijuana.

I don't like the fact that he has to go away for 20years. i feel something allot less would have been ok. But i am glad he is off the streets. Its people like this that kill Innocent people out just walking there dogs or just driving home.

I disagree. I do agree that the guy should not be driving in that state of mind... but not that we should be proactive and toss him in jail because he might kill an innocent person while driving like that. Should we toss jaywalkers in jail for 20 years because they might cause an accident and kill somebody?

I really like our drinking laws around here. There is no open container law... you want to walk down the street with a beer in hand, no problem. You can even drive with a beer in hand. The only way you get in trouble driving with alcohol here is if you cause material damage. I have not heard of a single driving related death (or injury) caused by alcohol since I moved here... and with rum being cheaper than milk, we drink a lot of alcohol.

(... and for all of those that tell me I would change my mind on drinking and driving laws if I had ever lost somebody close to me from a drunk driver... think again... my very close girlfriend in highschool was killed our junior year by a drunk driver running a stop light.)

Were saying the same thing....

You shouldn't be driving if your are drunk, its that simple. You say you like your drinking laws where you live, about how they have no open container law and that is fine. Drink all you want whenever you want, Just be responsible. Don't get into a car if you are trashed, that's how people die. You know that and i know that, we both lost someone to people who think they can drive a car when they cant even walk.

This is going to be this guys 6th DUI. Does he deserve 20years for it? no.. but something needs to be done to get him off the road. (besides jailing him for 20years)

maybe 20 years is harsh for DWI, but after getting caught at it 5 times previously, the guy shouldn't have even been driving at all, let alone driving drunk again...

i'm not going to lose any sleep just because they jailed a person who repeatedly puts his own desire to get wasted above the safety of others

mike, you're just crazy, that shit dont matter.  cannabis is illegal, thus bad, alcohol is legal, thus good.  Everybody knows since cannabis is an illegal poison that it is more of a priority to get off the streets than alcohol.
