Up till now I have always used a ten gallon aquarium with perlite and air pump. This has worked good but I Finally have enough extra cash that I can justify getting a new chamber. I have looked at some posts and I think I know what I'd Like to do. I would like to get one of those clear plastic tubs from walmart, then drill holes on either side of it and stuff with polyfil. then i would fill it will dung and or compost casings. I would let them humidify themselves. Also I though I could tilt the bins slightly, the CO2 would fall out the lower hole, being heavier than O2 and fresh air would get sucked in the top hole. what do you all think. larry

what do you plan on using for humidity? you did not state, but if it happened to be perlite, i would recommend that you get also an air pump ($5-$10 at petshop) and make some sort of bubbling attachement to it. that could help you raise the humidity and mantain some sort of fresh air intake that will be of good to you... my2cents

I am not planning on using anything for humidity other than the casing layer itself. larry

I have heard Anno say that he has some casings that humidify themselves, and I have seen pics of other setups that appear to do the same thing so I assume this is perfectly acceptable, right? l

In a sealed chamber, yes, the moisture of the casing layer is enough to provide humidity for primordia formation, but in a chamber with holes (even poly-fill stuffed) where moisture can escape, an alternate humidity source would probably be preferrable, even if it is only a small bubbler\pump setup.

I find I have problems trying to keep the humidty low enough for fruiting. Casing raises the humidity pretty well. I reckon what you describe will work fine. Just need to test it with a humidty meter to fine tune the hole sizes. I'd doubt that the CO2/O2 exhange thing is going to work all that well. I think you'll still need to fan them a few times a day.
