Can a sporeprint still be made?
    #3961421 - 03/23/05 09:17 PM (12 years, 7 months ago)

I have a contaminated cake with a little green spot that hasn't spread. I know you never consume mushrooms that came from contaminated substrate. BUT is it alright to make a sporeprint? I don't think toxins from foreign mold can destroy a good batch of spores....can they?

Trich spores are probably covering everything on that cake, and likely already landed on the underside (gills) of whatever mushroom you plan on printing. Mold spores spread fast and efficiently, in unbelievable quantity. It's risky, but anything is possible.

You can eat mushrooms from cakes infected with green mold, just F.Y.I.

I was thinking of letting the mushroom mature only to a point where the veil has not broken yet. The the spores are covered by the veil.

Then I was going to rinse the mushroom cap under bottled water to get rid of any foreign mold spores that might have landed on the cap.

WILL THIS WORK?

That will work, I wasn't sure if your veil was open or not.

Transfer mushroom away from cake and wipe off exterior with H202, cut away the veil, and make your print. The cap will open up slightly past that point, then drop spores.

Don't waist your time it will just cost you substrate in the future.
