no it is not necessary. by cutting the straw into small pieces you do a couple of things.

1 you create more surface by allowing the mycelium to colinize the inside and outside of the straw pieces. (however parts of pasteurized straw tend to lay flat rather than hold its cylindrical shape cancelling out some of this benefit)

2 allows myc access to increased nutes (the outside of the straw called the sheath is hard and the inside of the stalk transports the nutes.) Pasteurizing the straw weakens the the sheath so the myc have access to the nutes. It's the same as hydrating grain.

3 you can get more small pieces of straw into any given area by cutting it up rather than shoving it in hole. This is the only real benefit of cutting it up.

Ppl will argue otherwise. I find cutting straw a pain in the ass. I don't do it. when you are packing your straw take small handfulls and layer it in your tray. sprinkle in some myc. and then layer a small amount of straw again. pack it down and repeat till you have your desired depth. pack it down real hard. you'll be fine. It's easier to pack a tray with cut straw but it'll take you five times the amount of time to cut it all up.

Foaf picked one of these at a pawn shop for $5, almost brand new. Saved his hands, and does a quick job..

that looks nice. i tried scissors the first time and since i'll never do that again i tried a blendor the second time. the blender did a great job but the blender is now a mess and it took a fair amount of time (plus it was a little dangerous cause i was shoving my hands into it pushing the straw down). blender is better than scissors is what i'm trying to say, its also still pretty cheap.

fuck cutting straw sizzors suck!!!!!! I rather pay some company that doesnt know what they are getting into(forget there name blue mountain maybe maybe not the one that sold sheep shit back about 2 years ago). anyway got them to cut 40lbs but they complained cause it was almost impossible to cut into 1in lengths(my preference). It took them at least 4 tries or something like that but they still came into 3-5in shreds. Actually maybe it was bluethumbs who did it anyway it was somebody out east. back to the point have some other sorry fucker cut that shit cause either u will have shit loads of blisters or a broken lawn mower. By the way sheep shit is the best i have tried better then horse or cow shit.
