Casings constantly drying out! need experienced advice
    #3960800 - 03/23/05 06:51 PM (13 years, 1 month ago)

Well here's deal (again, sorry), my casings seem to dry out right at pinning. The casings I have now are in a Martha setup, with Cool-mist set RH at 92-96%. The top and bottom layers of the casing were both watered to near saturation where I could squeeze it and water would give a few drips. While there were still no signs of mycelium I would mist about 1-3 times a day depending on how moist it looked (and fanning). As soon as mycelium would start to show under the casing, I didn't mist as much and it still looked healthy and moist... everything goes real well for a few days, mycelium spreads evenly without overlay, and around this same time the casing pulls away from the edges and it looks really DRY right before pins pop up. It's sad seeing these pins pop up everywhere in a dry casing Obviously I don't want to mist because of harming the mycelium and I cant raise the RH because of the fruits. Should I use more water in the beginning of the casing? Or just let it go... I've heard that if it fruits, it obviously has enough water to continue but in my opinion, mushrooms are made of 90% water, so they need more than a dry casing to occomplish what mother nature would give to them. Is it possible to fill a syringe with clean water and inject it into multiple areas on the top casing layer to give more moisture? My last 2 casings got real dry but still fruited about 4 grams dry each... very unimpressive

Looks like the mix is heavy on coir, instead of heavy on verm. More verm for better water holding ability.

Really though, your casings look fine from the pictures.

i don't understand how they're drying out or why you think they're drying out if your misting 3x's a day and have the coolmist providing 95%RH

whats your sub? strain? have you been incubating them prior to fruiting?

I'm sure they're not THAT dry, I'm a perfectionist though. It's Blue Meanie strain, verm on bottom, top is verm, coco, and lime. They're incubated for 2 days (only 2 because the mycelium grows really fast and I don't want overlay), and I think I patched this one once maybe twice.

o, and I'm not misting 3 times a day anymore, I'm not misting at all because they're mycelium and they're about to fruit.

someone correct me if i'm wrong here, but iirc you can continue misting even when pins have started forming, just not quite as heavily

take your spray bottle and spray for bout 5 sec's 2 feet from the top of the casing, and it can be done for the duration of initial pinning through early pinning, anytime your casing layer seems to be moving toward dry
