Potassium Hydroxide
    #3960241 - 03/23/05 05:11 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

I've just made a 5% potassium hydroxide aqueous solution and was wondering if anyone had any good books or online references they could recommend regarding the effects of macrochemical reagents on Agaricus, Bolete, and Lactarius species.

Thanks.

In a general sense, KOH is useful for testing Agaricus species that bruise yellow. Specimens that are reluctant to produce the yellow color will generally do so with KOH.

The best book on boletes would be North American Boletes by Alan E Bessette, William C Roody, and Arleen R Bessette. It includes a great deal of information on macrochemical reactions of most species.

I don't know a current good reference on Lactarius, but I hear that Alan Bessette will be publishing a book on the genus soon. In the meantime David Arora's Mushrooms Demystified is a pretty good reference.

Happy mushrooming!
