mushrooms blackening after they've been picked -- good to eat or contamination?
    #3956241 - 03/22/05 09:08 PM (18 years, 11 months ago)

we left our mushrooms with a friend who was staying at college while we went home for break. when we got back, it turns out he picked lots of mushrooms off the cakes, but did not refridgerate them. some of them have darkened. there is NO green, NO gooeyness, NO fuzz, and NO odor. parts of the mushrooms have just turned gray or black. upon cutting some grayish black off a mushroom, whiter skin was found to be underneath it. upon leaving that mushroom out for a bit, it's skin started to turn a light bluish gray. now that we have them, we are drying them. just wondering if these mushrooms are safe to eat mixed in with our other, white mushrooms, though.

good white shrooms:
gray shroom:
black shroom:

Dry them puppies ASAP. You are okay, so long as no ROT shows up.
