45: 1 Painted Air/In The Morning (Askel 112) 1967
Formed in San Angelo, Texas as a foursome of fourteen year olds in 1964 called The Boys, they had changed their name to The Remaining Few and stabilized into line-up 'A' by 1966, They were the house band at San Angelo's top 13th Hour club for two years. Their 45 was produced by Ron Newdoll and only 300 copies were pressed. The 'A' side was brilliant garage psychedelia, commencing with a screeching intro which gradually slows down in tempo. The lyrics are sung to minimum instrumentation with each verse sandwiched by further screeching guitar work.
The flip, In The Morning, turns out to be a moody garage ballad with a melody reminiscent of Gerry and The Pacemakers' Ferry Cross The Mersey.
They spent some time in San Francisco before disbanding in 1970.
Compilation appearances have included: Painted Air on Acid Dreams - The Complete 3 LP Set (3-LP), Acid Dreams Testament (CD), Austin Landing, Vol. 2 (LP), Acid Dreams, Vol. 1 (LP) and Highs In The Mid Sixties, Vol. 12 (LP); In The Morning and Painted Air on The Human Expression And Other Psychedelic Groups - Your Mind Works In Reverse (CD).
(Vernon Joynson / Max Waller)
The lyrics of the song are from the point of view of a person who was just in a car crash and is about to die. The music is awesomely psychedelic. It's one of my favorite 60's psych songs. Discuss..........
