Survey for casing growers
    #3958273 - 03/23/05 10:15 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

I recently stopped growing, and am actually preparing to move soon. I've decided that I can't ignore the calls of the spore prints that I've been saving... it gets louder each night.

Anyway... I've decided that if I am going to do it again, I'd like to make sure that I'm doing it right from the beginning. I had marvelous results with my previous set up, but a lot of it was altered on the fly. Now that I have a chance to start from scratch again I'd like to take a lot of the variables into more consideration.

A lot of times people's responses to questions are as simple as "it all depends on the variables"... So here's a list of questions that will hopefully pin down those variables, and maybe give all of us a chance to compare notes. Sorry if it's long, but I'm really curious about this stuff... I know a lot of this stuff is in the grow log section, but it'd be nice to have a lot of responses in one place to reference. Also, a lot of people leave some of this stuff out when posting in the grow log forum.

This questionaire is really for casing growers only. Please include pictures where appropriate.

1. What type of substrate do you use?
2. Do you add any ammendments to your substrate, like gypsum?
3. How do you prepare it? (soaking times? PC times? Simmer? etc...)
4. What size jars do you use?
5. What type of gas exchange method do you use with your jars? (i.e. polyfill, tyvek, filter lids, metal lids with holes and tyvek, etc...)
6. How much substrate do you prepare at once?
7. How long do you wait before inoculation?
8. What method do you predominantly use when innoculating substrate? (spore syringe, liquid culture, g2g, tissue culture, etc...)
9. How do you inoculate? (i.e. open air, glove box, flow hood, etc...)
10. What strain(s) are you growing?
11. What method do you use to incubate your jars?
12. What temperature do you keep your jars at?
13. How long, on average, does it take before you see signs of first growth?
14. How often, and at what point do you shake your jars, if at all?
15. How long, on average, does it take before your jars are fully colonized?
16. Do you do anything special when incubating, like turning jars, fanning, etc?
17. When your jars are ready, how do you get the colonized substrate out?
18. What type of container do you case in? How much substrate does it hold (in jars)?
19. How do you clean the casing containers?
20. What type of casing mix do you use? Please give recipe and method of preparation (i.e. do you sterilize it?).
21. Do you put casing mix on the top & bottom, or just the top?
22. What depth is your substrate, and what depth is your top casing?
23. After your casings are prepared, do you cover them or keep them uncovered?
24. If you cover them, how long do you usually do this?
25. Do you mist before covering?
26. Do you incubate your casings?
27. At what point do you introduce light to your casings and what type of light?
28. Do you patch? How often do you need to do this?
29. Explain your fanning and misting strategy. How much and how often?
30. Do you stop misting at any point?
31. How do you keep the casings watered after pinset?
32. Please describe your terrarium set up. Martha? TiT? PmP? How many casings does it fit?
33. What types of humidifiers do you use and what type of timer are they on if any?
34. What do you do for fresh air exchange?
35. When and how do you harvest the mushrooms?
36. Ho many flushes can you get per casing?
37. Do you cold shock and dunk ever?
38. What type of water do you use in your sprayers and humidifiers? (distilled, tap, tap+h2o2?)
39. Do you ever have problems with contams, and at what point?
40. What do you do, if anything, to remedy the contamination?
41. How do you dry your mushrooms?
42. If you do weigh your harvest, what is the average dry weight per casing?
43. If you take spore prints, when and how do you do this?
44. If you take tissue cultures, same question.

I could probably go on but I think I've got enough here...

Ughh, do you want my resume too? I'll pass on the lengthy questionnaire. Most people have a short attention span. Please keep it short and simple if you want some feedback, that list is titanic.

You just asked for growlogs from everybody. If thats what you want, theres a section for that

I'm usualy not one to shy away from long lenthy responses...but each of those questions require a lenthy response...some multiple paragraphs becasue there are varibles within the varibles..sorry...thats to much for even me.

Growing with bags, start to finish (including my new grain and substrate prep)

jesus, sorry guys... it's funny that it's easier for y'all to post saying you don't want to do it and how it's a stupid idea rather than just ignoring it like the other 37 people who viewed the thread.

A) nobody said you HAD to do it. It's voluntary.
B) I know that it's long. If it was easy to reply to it probably wouldn't yield much useful information
C) Dobinky, I've read the FAQ. Even the contradictory parts. What I'm trying to do here is see how those contradicting methods work for different people.
D) The grow logs do not follow a standard format, and really only yield mycoporn and bragging rights IMO. Yes, I could comb through the piles of grow logs to pick out the one or two that are thorough enough and maybe make some comparison based on that, but this thread was really an effort to make a broader comparison and compile all the information in one place.

way to be negative... forget I brought it up.
