Casing Question
    #3956348 - 03/22/05 09:24 PM (19 years, 29 days ago)

What would you say the minimum and maximum substrate depth in casings is? What is result of the substrate layer being too thin?

Any help appreciated. Thanks

I would say if it's too thin you're defeating the purpose.

2-3"'s works pretty well. Less than that would probably mean not as much a yield.Good Luck.

most people here run their casing about 1/2 inch. That will be fine, i prefer 3/4. That way there is less patching when you pull up a mushroom

Hey tahoe, he asked about substrate layer, not casing layer.

Casing Question [Re: tahoe]
    #3956772 - 03/22/05 09:58 PM (19 years, 29 days ago)

This is why I am asking. For my first grow, I cased 6 1/2 pint PF jars. The substrate layer was about 1.25 inches. I got puny shrooms but the yield was alright (an ounce dry). I didn't get a second flush because it got contaminated, but it seemed that most of the nutrients were spent.

Will a thicker substrate layer just mean larger shrooms, ultimately giving the same yield?

It seems to make more sense to me logically, that a thinner substrate layer over a larger area would be better, as all the nutrients are spent in the first flush. This eliminates the aspect of contamination almost completely.

Any more opinions? Thanks.

try this trick. This is taken from http://www.mushroomadventures.com/instructions/mushroom-kit-instructions.html Its good info and it can be used in all aspects of mycology. Now the compist would be the same as substrate for cube growers
Here is the area of interest.
Set up your kit. Open the cardboard box and leave the box flaps pointing upward. Open the bag of compost, and pull up the excess plastic bag and leave it pointing up in the air, if it does not stay up tape it to the box flaps. Inside the bag of compost is a small bag of dry peat moss mixed with a little calcium carbonate, this is called casing. Casing is used as a covering to hold water and protect the mushroom mycelium growing in the compost. Scratch the entire surface of the compost 1/2" deep. You can use a nail or fork to do this. Next open the bag of dry casing, and into the casing bag add 1/2 cup of the scratched loose compost to grow large mushrooms or 1 cup of loose compost to grow smaller average size mushrooms and 5 cups (8 oz. cups) of room temperature tap water. Mix the water, 1/2 or 1 cup of loose compost and casing together, until you have an even very wet mixture. Let the casing sit in its? own bag for 15 minutes to absorb most of the water before applying it to the compost. (A cup of water is 8 fluid ounces.)

Casing Question [Re: tahoe]

Thanks.

So it really doesnt make a difference what the depth of the substrate layer is then, as long as it does actually fruit. Correct?

you would want at least an 1 but 1/2 inch would fruit.
