You work for HP? I have an HP laptop and whenever I call I always get Indians....not Canadians.

Do you know anything about HP shit? My HP laptop got all scratched up from a fucking magazine sitting on it. It seems to be a really wimpy finish. Is it possible to get it fixed somehow (get it resprayed or something)?

Also, I bought this thing in Oct. of 2004. I got the 1 year warranty with it. Now that I have had it for about five months, I am thinking I should get my warranty extended. Can I get it extended now? Or do I have a certain amout of time in which I need to get it extended and that time has passed?

For the warranty, yeah you can get it extended any time up to about 1 month AFTER your 1-year warranty ends. You can get an extended warranty for an extra 1 or 2 years, but HP does not give out any warranties to units older than 3 years (lol, because they know how long their shit lasts!).

As for getting your laptop fixed...I don't know of any way they can simply refinish it. They would probably have to replace the entire case, or at least the scratched part, but they would most likely just replace the whole laptop if it came down to that.

Now they aren't too likely to do ANYTHING about it, because they will say it is "use and abuse" which is not covered under the standard warranty...so I'm gonna give you some tips for dealing with HP tech support!

First, if you want to speak to a "supervisor" (they're actually just 2nd level tech agents) say the phrase "I want to speak to a supervisor" 3 times, in a row if you want. 3 is the magic number of times the customer has to say "I want a supervisor" before we are supposed to actually give them a supervisor. If you say it three times then say "I asked three times, you have to connect me to one now" most agents around here will be MORE than happy to do so (hey, it gives us an excuse to get you off OUR line!)

So if you want to get your laptop scratches fixed, what you're gonna do is call into tech support and tell the tech that your laptop turns on, but nothing at all shows up on the screen. They will walk you through some troubleshooting steps. Each time they tell you to turn the laptop on, just tell them it has a blank screen. Eventually they will get you set up with a bench repair, for which you will have to ship your laptop back to HP (don't worry, HP will pay for all the shipping costs). They won't do anything to it on the bench because they'll turn it on and see it works fine right away. They will send it back to you, at which point you call back into tech support VERY irate and tell them you just got your laptop back from a repair but it is all scratched up. Do the supervisor 3x thing here and speak to a 2nd level tech. BE NICE to them, but make it clear that you are angry about your laptop being scratched instead of repaired. At this point they SHOULD escalate your case to a case manager, who does have the power to completely replace your laptop if needed. From that point (once you get a case manager) you should be sitting pretty :wink:

And for ANYONE who ever needs to call tech support:

Most (probably all) major companies use call-centers now for tech support. The people you are speaking to are, for the most part, poorly trained and started the job with little to ZERO knowledge about the products they will be supporting. They don't have to follow an exact script (though some ISP's do) but they DO have a set of rules they have to follow for each and every call. You getting angry will generally NOT help the situation at all unless you get angry for the right reasons (actually getting angry at a regualr tech agent is a REAL bad idea, since they will try to spite you for getting angry in the first place...trust me).

The trick with tech support is to know the system the people have to abide by. If you know what they are expecting to hear from you, you can say what needs to be said to LET them do what you want. If you want a new part, they really have no problem with sending you a new part provided they can cover their own asses while doing so :wink:

Exactly. If you want any help at all, don't get any at a tech support guy. He can hang up on you with very little risk of getting in trouble. He can fuck up your computer.

And don't fucking lie to them, ok? First of all, we have records of our calls, we know you didn't call 10 times today without getting help. We can see that you called one time and refused to follow basic instructions. We know how long you had to wait on hold, so don't fucking tell us you waited for an hour when you waited for two minutes.


If it seems like the tech is asking stupid questions unrelated to what you're telling them, and you think you know more than the tech, don't be a dick, answer the questions. Here's why: people call us and lie ALL THE TIME. We ask "Have you tried rebooting your computer?", and they say yes all the time, even if they haven't. We ask if you're sure you have the right password, and they say they've entered it 10 times and double checked it, even though they called in immediately after hastily typing in their password and getting an "Incorrect Password" message.

Oh, and don't tell me you're a network technician thinking that will impress me. Whenever someone tells me that, I get them to perform a simple task any network tech should know how to do like "Could you just ping google.com for me then?"... guess how many "network technicians" knew what the hell I was talking about: 0.

The actual network techs tend to know what tech support is really like, and will follow my instructions. They usually reveal their knowledge by telling me, in detail, the steps they've gone through, not by bitching at me arrogantly.

I used to work tech support. Don't fuck with us, you're only fucking with yourself.

Naw there's a lot of customers who seem to know about the 3-time rule already.

Though it's not a rule set in stone...more just a guideline they want us to follow before transfering someone to a supervisor.

Actually the "supervisors" here are the guys who actually know what they're doing, the 2nd-level tech agents. They introduce themselves on sup calls as "non-technical supervisor" just so they won't have to do any troubleshooting...but they're also the same guys who answer the 2nd level line for the regular agents who don't know shit :wink:
