Spotted, striped, and notched shrooms *PICS*
    #3953185 - 03/22/05 01:34 PM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Just wanted to share these weirdos:

Here's another pic showing the whole flush:

You can't really see it, but most of them have a stripe on their stem like these:

As you can see in the first picture, the spots later turn into swirls and the caps start to turn greenish before the veil starts to break (they're actually a lot more pretty but the flash washes out some of the color).

The weird thing is that I inoculated another batch of grain at the same time with the same liquid myc, as you can see in the closer tray here:

They look totally normal...

A lot of the weirdos also have a notch or two in the cap:

Another difference that I've noticed between the two trays is the amount of bluing -- when I cut the stem of one of the "normal" shrooms while it was still growing, it was a gray/green like usual.  But when I cut one of the weird ones it was already completely blue, darker than I've ever seen in any cube (but I've only seen cubes).  The normal one continued bluing of course after it was picked but it nowhere near caught up with the other one -- not even close.  (I'll get some pics next time I pick one).

Both trays are either Ecuadorian or Cambodian, I can't remember which, started from spores injected into malt water and stored in a fridge for about a month or so (maybe 2).  The liquid myc was used to inoculate some grain (rye for the upper tray, wheat for the lower).  Both were incubated for about the same time (1.5 weeks or so...) and cased with straight verm.  It took almost 3 weeks for them to pin, but when it happened they both pinned on the same day.  A few of the bigger mushrooms have already been picked for cloning and spore printing.

Here's a pretty crappy picture from a few days ago so you can see how they evolved:

That big one has already been picked.  The biggest ones in the first picture are those 2 on the far right.  It was starting to pull away from the sides a lot so I filled it in with some more verm.

Ok, I'll stop rambling....  Hope you enjoy

I notice that the "normal" casing doesn't have nearly as many shrooms on it. And I think the blue is an indication of the amount of psilocybin. I'd try and take a spore print from those weird ones! Hopefully those traits will be passed on.

"Dude, these shrooms are the bomb! They even got little swirls and stripes and shit on them!!"

How is that straight verm. casing working out for you? looks pretty nice I thought about doing one but some people on here said that straight verm. sucks.

The markings on the tops of the caps are purplish are they not? They are spores, I noticed when the caps start to open I found spore deposits on the caps, its strange, not sure how they get there. try wiping them off with your finger, they should smeer if there spores. as for the notches in the caps, thats usually caused by low humidity.

Nah, check pic 3. The spots were there before any veils were even near breaking... I'm pretty sure the humidity is ok too because there is condensation everywhere and fuzz is growing on the stems. I even think it's too high.

There were a few mushrooms on that casing that were growing down into the casing layer and most of the rest started off growing along it like a vine, so it definitely ain't normal.

I think that green is some mold though : (
