Does just plain wet verm easily get contaminated? I notice that PF jars do but maybe its the brf that makes it so sensitive.

I think vermiculite is just mica, if you pasterurize/sterilize it, you won't have a problem. however, I would guess that once you're using the vermiculite, it could aid in contamination by holding excessive water and bacteria. correct me if I'm wrong.

Verm is contamproof. Water is contam heaven. So is un colonized BRF.

in my experience the Brown Rice Flour is the contam magnet because you are trying to grow fungi and BRF is you nutrient that feeds germinating spores. i've never had mold contaminate just plain vermiculite.

exactly, and dry BRF will not contam very fast either.

Take a bucket of water, and after some weeks sliem etc will be in it.
Water is contam heaven, brf in cakes is that too.

I'm pretty sure that BRF will contaminate very easily if not properly stored. It has something to do with the high fat content, I believe.

What is properly? Its dry dude, it hardly contam. Spores will settle but wont germinate. Trow some cube spores in dry BRF, nothing will happen.....

the fact that dry verm wont contamn is basically one of the biggest breakthroughs that make the pf-tek successful without that layer of dry verm on the top the pf-tek probably wouldnt have even a 5% success rate

Wouldn't vermiculite soaked with distilled water be contam free also? No nutes in distilled.

yeah sounds sane, but also in sterile environment cause enemies will land in water and so on and so on...

I never use distilled though, sometimes I boil my tapwater but most of the time straight tapwater is used here.

I think colonized substrate is rather contam proof. Not 100%, at all, but has some good resistance.
