i'm not sure you have a "weak batch" of PAL...with so many spores i don't think the odds are high that you get all tard-o spores.

if you (oh sorry, afoaf) got the spores from a vendor then they should be fine. i got some spores of a particular strain from a home grower and they don't perform very well, which i'm thinking is a defect in genetics caused by too many grain to grain transfers or something.
vendor spores should be top-notch so i wouldn't worry about that. also, colonization time apparently is different between strains. i'd chalk up the difference of colonization rate to the fact that afoaf is working with 2 different strains.

id like to clear up that spores from just any vendor aren't guaranteed to be good. but from a SHOORMEY vendor/sponsor i would say guaranteed.

Could be the strain, but I suspect it also has to do with the concentration of spores in the syringe. Also could be the spores used for the Palenque were older.
I, personally, have never had much luck with Pal though. All of them grew REALLY skinny with really small caps. I am not running a Martha Stewart though, so that could be the problem.
Anyway, gl

In my friends experiance with colonizing MxC and PAL jars, the MxC typically colonized faster, but that could be because he was a bit more liberal with the spores because he had 2 syringes of MxC and only one PAL. They were both cased on the same day, and results will be posted in his growlog after teh first flush.
