A FOAF has 4 half pints and a quart jar of this kind of substrate in his incubator now. He soaked the corncob 24 hours, drained, then mixed in the dry ingredients. When he mixed up the first three half pints, he thought it looked too dry, so he added water. The result was a little too dense, and he feels colonization time will be longer because of this.

In the last pint, and the quart, he soaked for 24 hours, simmered, drained, then added the dry ingredients, and left it alone. This produced a relatively dry looking substrate, but it is also airy and porous, and the mycelium are spreading through it rapidly. The drier jars also show some condensation, so there is apparently, enough water.

All of the jars were PC'd for 90 minutes after they were filled with substrate, and inoculated the following day.

We will see.

Suggest you soak growned up corn cob at least 24 hours, then BOIL for an hour, to get moisture content HIGH. Corn cob is very much like WOOD.
